Chapter 2 -- Nice to Eat with You: Acts of Communion

Choose a meal from a literary work and apply the ideas of Chapter 2 to this literary depiction.

  1. In the Book a Single Shard The main character gets lost in the woods and meets a fox. Being told several terrifying stories about people getting their souls taken by foxes the main character is cautious at first and then when he realizes that the fox is a harmless soul he befriends it and he fixes them both something to eat, they split a fish, the fox soon then became a very loyal companion to the main character, this meal had communion between the main character and a fox the main character decided that the fox was friendly and they became friends. This is communion in such a way of friendship between a character and a piece of the wild, the fox.

In the work of literature The Fault In Our Stars, Hazel and Augustus are both Cancer patients or were once; therefore, they were both given a wish that children Cancer patients are given. They both like a book and the author that wrote the book lives in the Amsterdam. Hazel wants to go and meet him but she has no way to because she has already used her wish. Augustus forms a sort of picnic in the middle of a beautiful park while he is wearing a jersey. He informs her that the name on the back of the jersey is Dutch and the park they are in was made by a dutch artist. When he opens the picnic basket, all of the foods are orange and Augustus tells her that orange is the national color of the Netherlands. Finally, Augustus tells her that he never used his wish and that he was taking them to Amsterdam. The entire picnic created a feel for the final surprise and it showed how much he cares about her.

I don't know of many literary works that have meals in them, other than old "real life" TV shows. The only example from a book that I can think of is from the Warriors cat series, made by Erin Hunter. This is my personal favorite series. During times of relaxation or free time, the cats would group together with their friends to eat their hunt, such as rabbits or usually mice. Some of them would share their hunt together. Often times, they would eat together to get to know each other. Other times, they would eat together in order to share ideas or plans to take care of their clan-related problems. The clan leaders would occasionally do this with other clan leaders in order to talk about problems relating to two or more clans. This allows them to feel as if they were talking to someone as if they were a friend, not as an enemy. It also allows them to bond together, as it's easier to bond when you are doing something in common with another; something both of you find important or necessary to do.

Since I am not familiar with many literary works that of which include meals, I decided to choose a scene from the book Every Day, written by David Levithan.

In "Every Day," our protagonist, "A" moves from person to person each day and experiences 24 hours of their life. Upon being in the body of Rhiannon's boyfriend (Rhiannon is A's newfound love interest), A falls head over heels and must explain his situation to this girl. One of the meetings that A and Rhiannon shared occurred while A was in the body of a morbidly obese male, and this meeting happened to be one at a café. Obviously, Rhiannon being a fit girl, she would most likely show a level of discomfort while watching this gigantic, slovenly guy shove food down his throat like there was no tomorrow. And of course, A themself (this character is indecisive on their true gender identity) also is self conscious about eating in front of his lover as well, and looking so grotesque by doing so.

Now, I will explain exactly why I chose this scene. Within the story, this moment was definitely a key element that played in A and Rhiannon's relationship. Rhiannon was able to accept being with A and their ever-changing life, while she had only experienced seeing A in attractive bodies. Not only did Rhiannon have to meet with an unattractive person, she also has to eat with an unattractive person, and be seen in public with them, sharing a whole level of communion. Since Rhiannon did not run away or cancel the rendezvous with A and their temporary form, she proved a level of commitment and acceptance that A wouldn't be an attractive person every day, but she would overlook that for the chance to be with A themself, regardless of looks or the person they embodied.

This scene was the tiebreaker in "Every Day," either Rhiannon was in love with the way A had looked in previous bodies, or she loved A for who they were as a person and wanted to be in their company.

  5. I don't know of any books where meals have gone good and everybody got along. I chose to a book that went along with people leaving the meal and saying something like "I have lost my appetite", so I ended up choosing the 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire'. In the book there is a moment where Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mallark are at a party. At the party someone told Peeta to drink something that will make him vomit so that he could eat more, this offended Peeta and Katniss to where they had to walk away. This is an example of one of the bad signs it talks about in the book.

In the work of literature The Blind Side, there is a Thanksgiving dinner scene. This book is based on true events, which makes it so heartwarming for me. In this part of the book it is Thanksgiving and like many families they’re having a massive dinner. Michael, the teen taken in by the Tuohy family, still doesn’t feel as if he’s part of the family. He appreciates all that is being done for him, but he is slowly, but surely, getting comfortable around all of them. When Collins, Sean, and S.J. serves themselves food they all go to the living room and do what many American families do on Thanksgiving, watch football. But, Michael goes to the dining room and eats his dinner by himself. Like I stated before, he still doesn’t feel like he’s part of the family. Leigh Anne then gets all of the family to join Michael at the table to have a proper dinner with all of the family. This dinner allows them all to bond with each other, have a conversation, etc. Instead of just laying on a couch and watching football.

In the film “Why Did I Get Married?” a group of married friends take a retreat to the mountains of Colorado and rent a cabin together. However, not everyone gets along. Their relationships are full of secrets, lies and cheating. At the dinner table, all of the friends start talking and eventually all of the secrets come out. Two individuals have been cheating on their spouses, one woman has undergone a reproductive procedure without telling her husband and another couple have resentment issues toward each other after losing their son. What intended to be a nice, welcoming meal of friendship and bonding turned out to be a time of secret telling and a meal full of drama. The couple's intended to come together as a group of friends and hide behind their masks of lies and secrets but after leaving the dinner table, the tone of the film changed because all of the couples were shown raw and flawed.

In the movie "The Best of Me," an elderly man named Tuck takes in a teenager named Dawson Cole. Dawson didn't have the best home life and when we ran away he stumbled over to Tuck's place. While living with Tuck, Dawson meets Amanda Collier - a girl, who lets just say, isn't in need for much of anything.

Tuck was a very solitaire person after his wife passed away because he had no one to share or talk to. But after Dawson and Amanda came into his life, Tuck's heart began to soften and his love grew for them more and more everyday.

One night while eating dinner with Amanda and Dawson, Tuck decides to share about his wife. He tells them stories about he and his wife when he was in war and how he never stopped loving her.

This dinner meal led to Tuck sharing photographs, memories, and anything else he had about his wife.

  9. In A Raisin In The Sun, the main scene that sticks in my head is when Walter Lee wont eat the eggs his wife, Ruth, made for him. This symbolizes the rockiness in their relationshitp. It shows how even when Ruth is aggravated or done with Walter, she still cares about him very deeply. When Walter refuses to eat the food that she made for him, it shows the reader how frustrated Walter really is with ruth. He wants to go against her in any way possible. Ruth just wants to take care of him and be on his side, but he insists on going against her. Because of the fact that they are going so against eachother, even over something as simple as eating eggs, it represents how brittle and withered away the bond between them is. This "meal scene" is very important to the overall story because they have a cold relationship when we are introduced to them and this scene shows it to us.

  10. The Lightning Thief of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series includes a meal at the start of the book. More is told about the events occurring before and after the meal than the meal itself. The events occurring in the meal are hinted at by the positive, cheerful mood held after the meal, exhibiting the high camaraderie between most everyone. What took place before the meal, however, is where the purpose of this meal’s occurrence in the story took place. Most of the events occurring prior to the actual consumption of the food during the meal are mealtime rituals that would seem abnormal to most people today, but him learning those rituals shows that he is not only starting to form into this community of people, he is also starting to become friends with them.

  11. In the television series Arrow, Oliver Queen returns home after a boat crash that led him being stranded on an island for 5 years. Following his return, his mother plans an act of communion through a family dinner to unite the entire family after Oliver's separation. The dinner starts off warm and welcoming as the family eats the lovely meal. They make conversation by speaking of things Oliver missed being away. Oliver discusses his plans to tour the city and swing by his family's business. The family business was previously run by Oliver’s father, who was killed in the boat crash previously mentioned. However, it is now run by a man named Walter, who has attended the family meal. The meal takes a sharp turn when Oliver mentions Walter sleeping with his mother. The atmosphere then becomes tense as the mother and Walter stare in disbelief. Nobody has told Oliver that his mother and Walter are now married. However, after Oliver's comment, the secret is out and he is told the truth. The conversation quickly dies out and the family starts picking at their food. Oliver stops eating and asks to be excused, leaving the family at the table. He can not believe that his mother would dishonor his father by remarrying. This act of communion symbolizes the family's damaged relationship. After Oliver's time away, the family's relationship changed in many ways. This meal shows that the family must accept the change and adjust to properly get along.

  12. In the popular movie The Breakfast Club, there is an important meal that is had. The movie The Breakfast Club is about five different students that are in different cliques in high school. Claire is representational of the preps, Andrew is supposed to represent the jocks, Bender embodies a rebel, Brian portrays the nerds and Allison illustrates the outcast of the group. During lunch, each of the teenagers has very different lunches. Brian has a typical lunch, Andrew has a high calorie lunch, Allison has a fairly normal lunch but finds a way to eat it in a strange manor, Claire has sushi and Bender doesn't have a lunch. Throughout the time they're eating, we learn about how Bender's parents don't care about whether he eats or not and we learn that Andrew's parents are overinvolved in his life. We also learn about how Claire's family has the money for her to be able to eat what she does. This is an important scene in the movie because even though they all have different lifestyles, they all still learn more about each other and it is sort of an eye opener for the viewers to know more about the characters.

  13. I would like to bring back my aforementioned novel "The Good Thief". Communion is normally happy, but can often times be used to show true tension between characters. Late in the book, Ren, or protagonist, is captured by his abusive, evil uncle. The uncle drags him into a small, dark room in the back of a mousetrap factory he owns and pulls out a huge box of candy. Ren gladly accepts and the two dine on that until they are sick. The uncle begins with some questions to Ren in a polite, easygoing tone, but over the course of those few minutes things turn tense and angry as Ren refuses to answer question about his adopted father and life of crime. What started out as the uncle try to have communion and lure in Ren with thoughts of family and false security turned into some physical abuse of Ren, plots of his demise, and his imprisonment till he complied. This scene made Ren hate his uncle even more and crystallized the uncles motives. Ren knew that the uncle only wanted his knowledge and thus created battle ground between the two. Ren did not choose to fight back, but the uncle was ready to destroy all manner of things in the room. At one point I believe he even broke a window in this scene, which foreshadowed his death. The book chooses to keep this relationship until the books climax where anger turns to pure contempt. This simple scene let the readers know exactly what will take place later on.

  14. In the movie Black Mass, the main character is not considered a protagonist due to his ruthlessness. He ran a mob in Boston and killed people no matter how much money or promises they gave the mobster. Eventually, he got eyed by the federal government but for his luck, one man who worked for the federal government cut a deal in the shadows to keep letting him run his mob in exchange for information to advance through his department. The man who worked for the feds decided to invite the mobster to eat dinner at his house even though his wife was uncomfortable bringing him into their home. This was a risky decision but the government official used this invitation as an opportunity to get the mobster comfortable enough to start getting information for his benefits. This part of the book places two characters on the opposite side of the law to share a meal with the purpose of having a longterm relationship in a good stance. Sharing a moment that most people only share with their family and close friends led up to the federal official and the mobster working together for the years to come.

In the movie "The Help" their is a simple meal that is taken by a black slave, and a rich white woman. "The Help" is a movie that is based on the 1960's way of life style, where the colored were treated unfairly, and the whites were treated like royalty. The meal took place between Minny Jackson and Celia Foote. Minny made the meal and sat at the tiny table that was in the kitchen, meant for the slaves to eat at. Celia took her plate form the elegant dinning room and sat at the tiny table with Minny. When Minny realized what Celia was doing, Minny took Celia's plate and told her to go back and eat in the dinning room where she was meant to eat her meal. Celia refused to move and ordered Minny to put her plate back on the table in the kitchen and told her that she was fine sitting right there. She did this because she did not see color, she saw how it felt to be segregated because she has been segregated by the other white women in her county because of a past misunderstanding. This scene is important because it was one of the defining moments in history that segregation would soon end.

In the movie “Madea’s Big Happy Family” Shirley, the mother, wanted to gather all of her family together to tell them that she had cancer. So Madea went out and told the family that they were all going to come over and eat. Once everyone got done eating then the mother was going to tell everyone about her cancer, but thing didnt go according to plan. Right when they start to eat that's when things start to go south. Some of the family left and the others started to fight with each other. Needless to say the mother did not tell her family about her cancer because after that happened, her nerves was to tore up. This was an example of how the meal ended up being a bad sign. It was a bad sign because just like the meal, it failed and was not enjoyed just like how the mother's health failed and her family took her company for granted.

  17. Meals can make a large impact on characters, and give the reader or viewer insight into the characters. One meal that I found a good example of this is the meal that the company tries to join in the forest of Mirkwood from the book The Hobbit.

Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, and a company of dwarves are on a quest, and must pass through the dangers of the Mirkwood. It is naturally very dark in the forest, but at night the darkness is complete. The company is starved for some sign of decent life, and as the company travels, they see lights and hear elves singing, but as they approach the lights go out and the elves disappear. They keep traveling and this happens two more times. The meal just shows how unwelcome the dwarves are to this race of elves. This instance is foreshadowing the fact that the elves do not want the dwarves to join them as equals or even allies.

Gerard, Allison’s grandfather, comes to town when his daughter dies, so he has no clue that Scott is a werewolf, just that him and Allison used to date, but don’t anymore for some reason. There’s an episode when Gerard invites Scott over for dinner after a lacrosse game. Allison’s parents didn’t know Scott was coming over until he showed with their daughter and father. The entire meal was awkward because they all knew that if Gerard knew Scott was a werewolf he would kill him, but Gerard that it was awkward since Scott and Allison used to date. To try to erase the tension he ask Scott and Allison a lot of question about why they broke up, but it failed miserably since they couldn’t tell him the real reasons for anything and had to keep coming up with lies. This whole entire situation could’ve been avoided if Scott declined Gerard’s offer, but it’s rude to turn down someone when they invite you over for something so personal and close to home.

In the book Everlost by Neal Shusterman, there are two teens that get into a car wreck and instead of finding themselves in heaven, they are in sort of a limbo. The two of them, Nick and Allie, find a boy named Lief in the forest they were killed in. They try and find Mary, who is a sort of guardian for everyone stuck in that limbo. When they finally find her, they also find that there's food that they can touch and eat from the real world that had somehow found itself in limbo. This had seemed impossible to them because, as afterlights, they can't touch things that are alive or in the real world; they will sink through them. They have a meal there and they all come together. Nick and Allie had been at each others throats during most of the story until this time. It helped them forget that they had no where to go and no one to go to; no family anymore. Food was a rarity that they were able to enjoy and that helped them forget about bad things for a little while.

Thomas Foster describes eating food together as communion. The meal I will choose from a literary work comes from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" towards the end. The Grinch is so intent on preventing Christmas from happening that year so he goes into the houses of the Whos and says he's replacing a bulb that had gone out. When the Grinch finally "stole Christmas" he sees that the Whos have gathered to celebrate anyway. A Who named Cindy Lou Who invites the Grinch to the holiday feast and he goes despite trying to steal Christmas. He joins them and in the end he was the one who cut the roast beef. The meal represents the acceptance of the Grinch even though he had done wrong. The Grinch sees the true meaning of Christmas and the communion of the whole community together as a whole.

The meal I chose is from a TV series called “The Fosters”. It’s Christmas, Stef's mother comes into town and starts to cause problems and mixed emotions. Being Christmas Stef and Lena are having a family dinner everyone gets a gift except Lena because Stef and Lena decided they were not getting each other gifts this year, but, Lena buys Stef a gift anyway. Stef makes a remark about the cost of the gift making Lena upset then Stef and her mother begin to argue. Brandon, one of Stef and Lena's children tells Lena he smells something burning, therefore, Lena goes to check the food, when Lena gets back she is real upset, she says the food is burnt and apologizes for everything people don’t like as in the gifts. The purpose of this meal was to show the tensions in the family at the time.

Wes has made his mom's passing a good thing, deciding to clean up his act and make his art based on his mom's “life motto”. Macy has closed herself in and feels the need to be perfect and always in control with her dad gone. Their “meal” together would be the game truth. The rules are you have to tell the truth no matter what, the first one unwilling to answer a question loses. Wes and Macy ask serious questions that cause the other to really analyze their own life and actions, while learning the others biggest fears, secrets, mistakes and everything that makes them them.. The game leads up to Macy realizing being perfect and in control is impossible and she ultimately takes a chance with Wes. For Wes, the game makes him fall for Macy and they really connect throughout the game, learning their similarities like the death of a parent and their differences how they chose to deal with it.

  23. The meal I have chose to go over is in “The Giver”, every evening the people of the eutopia have to go over the things that have happened during the day also known as “the telling of feelings”. During the telling of feelings it is an exchange of feelings for the family to give each other advice. An example of this is where the sister talks of a boy cutting in line and the father then says that the boy was probably in need of attention whether it be good or bad. After he said that then the little sister understood and accepted that he just needed attention.

Meals are constantly seen throughout literature, sometimes they are simply fluff, but other times they are acts of communion. In the meal that we are going to be looking at is a little bit of both.

In the popular television series Arrow we come to know a tough, cold, and slightly intimidating Oliver Queen, but then in season four we get to see him living in the suburbs with neighbors who aren't trying to kill him. We see Oliver, Felicity, and a few neighbors enjoying a nice meal outside. Their conversation is mostly small talk and then someone mentions kids in Oliver and Felicity's future, and Oliver tells them that having kids is not too far away. From season three Oliver to first episode season four Oliver we see a huge change. When I heard this I almost choked on the pizza I was eating at the time.

This meal showed growth in Oliver and Felicity's relationship, communion if you will. When viewers were offered the idea of children it was an immediate sign that this season would have a very different tone. The meal itself showed us that Oliver and Felicity were capable of normal lives, despite everyone's beliefs, and they were willing (in the future) to take their relationship to the next level.

    2. I totally agree. With this dinner, we were able to see how their relationship was progressing. In this dinner, you could also see that they were rather uncomfortable when they mentioned kids. It almost seemed that Felicity and Oliver were uncertain of the future or were scared to face it. Also, let's be honest, Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak will never lead normal lives. They are Team Arrow after all.

    3. I haven't watched this episode yet, but I probably would have choked on my food, too. This is definitely a really good connection.

  26. In the show, American Horror Story: Murder House, there is an eating scene where Norma and Charles Montgomery sit down with their baby and have a not so pleasant dinner. Charles accuses the baby of not knowing if it's a boy or girl due to the baby wearing a bonnet and a sleep gown. Finical problems makes it way to the dinner table and they start fussing again. The baby starts crying and Norma calls the waitress in to take the baby away and Charles goes on about how he built the house for Norma. They then discuss how a girl is coming to their house to get an abortion from Charles. The meal showed how they are a loud family who always fights about the smallest things like the baby wearing a bonnet and dress.

  27. In the popular television show “Full House” viewers were brought into the everyday life of a common family. However, throughout the course of the seasons the characters faced many problems and soon after they would have dinner together and everything would be back to normal. One of the episodes that symbolises communion the best is when DJ starves herself for 3 days because she is no longer content with the way her body looks. When the family gets together to eat dinner that night everyone tries to help DJ out by eating a little healthier so she won’t feel alone. This adds to the show because DJ always had a good head on her shoulders and she rarely had problems so for her to go through something like this was very important to the climax.

  28. In the movie You're not You, the beginning is portrayed as sweet and happy. A few months later she is tragically diagnosed with a terminal disease. One thing she doesn't like ever since she was diagnosed with her disease her later ex husband hires her nurse after nurse until finally decides to hire a girl whose dreams were lost just like her to be her nurse. Towards the ending after going through so much she has a dinner in which she is happy and shares an meal with someone like her. That scene gave off such a warm and lovable feeling.

The Great Gatsby. Near the end/middle of The Great Gatsby, Tom holds a dinner party. Everyone is gathered to have a good time until Tom recognizes Gatsby and Daisy. Tom recognizes what´s going on between them and their relationship. The Dinner party then comes to a stop because Tom wants to get away from the heat, so they all go for drive into the city. This is where Gatsby´s plans for trying to get Daisy to love him back stops. It stops because of the big fight/argument. But right before the big chaos, Gatsby tries to tell Daisy everything. They both do. Tom and Gatsby both try to tell Daisy how much they love her and how much they want to be with her but that is what causes all the ruckus. That is the communion in the movie, The Great Gatsby.

  30. Meals are plentiful in novels and tv. Meals can represent a get together or something even more symbolic. In the classic movie A Christmas Story the protagonist is named Ralphie. The day before Christmas his dad tries to eat little pieces of turkey that was supposed to be their dinner. While their entire family was busy a group of dogs managed to eat all of the turkey. This made his dad mad and then they had to find a different meal. They go to a Chinese restaurant and end up having a meal that will stick with them for a lifetime. The waiters attempt to sing Christmas carols and through this experience the family becomes more close and has a meal that will be remembered.

  31. There are multiple scenes from the Hunger Games that show food and those aren’t particularly great examples of a dinner scene. There is a scene on the train where there are shots of multiple lavious snacks and little pastries. The food is a statement of how the Capitol is superior to all of the other districts. The offering of the various expensive-looking food is like a symbol of the Capitol and how it wants the tributes to feel special and sympathized with through food.

  32. The dinner scene in Shrek 2 is supposed to be a civilized meal between Fiona's parents and Shrek. It is obvious within the first few moments that Shrek has different mannerisms and opinions than Fiona’s parents. This causes the King and Shrek to butt heads over many subject in the scene such as Fiona’s childhood, Shrek’s childhood, and ogres in general. They also should aggressive behavior toward each other throughout the scene. At the end of the scene Fiona storms off, embarrassed and angry at both her husband and father. The meal causes further hatred and disagreement between two people that Fiona love.

Eating can show us that we all have something in common and it can be positive or negative. Communion can also cause the reader to feel tension or relaxation depending on the writer’s description of the meal. An example of a positive communion would be the famous dinner scene from the movie, Lady and the Tramp. Lady and Tramp share a plate of spaghetti on a moonlit date. These dogs are from different worlds so it really shows the significance of who we share communion with. It didn’t matter that Lady and Tramp were from different sides, they ate together because we only eat with those who we feel close to.

    1. Lady and the Tramp is probably one of my favorite kinds of communion. It shows how no matter how different, we can still be friends and love one another.

  34. With this post, I would like to touch on The Hunger Games again. In the beginning, Peeta works at a bakery and he had burnt bread one day. His mother told him to go throw it out, but instead of throwing it all away, he throws a loaf to Katniss. Event though this isn't a "meal," this can still be considered communion. In this chapter, the author mentions "breaking bread" and I thought this example was perfect because he is breaking bread. In the end of The Hunger Games, Peeta and Katniss even team up together to win because they end up the only two people left, and since they don't want to kill one another, they decide to both die together, but they are stopped abruptly when the announcer says that they both have won.

  35. I choose to do this on the show Scream Queens that is aired Fox. On one episode the girls of the Kappa house and the dean of the university had a Thanksgiving dinner. The dinner started out civilized then a few minutes in they start taking about the red devil that had been killing the people on the campus. This had led to all of them accusing each other of being the red devil. This meal caused a lot of arguments and disagreements to begin between the dean and the girls of the Kappa house.

  36. Eating plays a big role in a lot of literature, being a formal greeting or reunion a lot of times. My example is the movie "Chef". It is about a renowned chef who spends all of his time cooking and almost none with his son who is in his divorced wife's custody. Becoming tired of the limitations the restraint puts on his creativity with food, he leaves to start a food truck. His ex wife encourages him to start hanging out with his son more and together the chef and his son make and share their first meal from the food truck together. They slowly get more and more reunited with each other until the chef decides to hire his son after school and on weekends so they can see each other every day.

  37. The meal that came to my mind is from the film “The Hunger Games”. I will be speaking of the scene when Peeta throws the bread to Katniss. By analyzing this scene, I can see that even though the bread was burnt, Katniss was still grateful. That reveals a lot about her personality and helps us infer that she is a nice young woman. Not only does it help us understand her personality but it also allows us to understand the condition that she is in. Since she took the burnt piece of bread, we can easily infer that her family is poor.

In many novels and movies dinner between friends, family, or people that just meet each is shared as an act of communion. An act of communion can either be positive or negative. An example happens in “Max”, a movie directed by Boaz Yakin, in a short scene of the movie.
In the movie Justin Wincott, the protagonist, and his parents invite one of Justin’s friend over to have dinner with them. The family recently had suffered a tragedy in which the Justin lost his brother, Kyle, in a military battle. So, Justin meet a friend a few days after the lost and when Justin's mom see him playing around with Carmen and another friend, She invites them over for dinner stating that “it would be a pleasure to have them over” and smiles when one the friends says yes. Dining dinner, Justin’s dad integrates Carmen trying to make her feel uncomfortable by make rude and making racist comments towards everything she answers back to him. Mr. Wincott did not know that someone would be over for dinner and he was not very please. Justin’s mom brings out desert to try and fix things. Mrs. Wincott had invited Carmen over to feel like things were “okay”. Justin tries to make Carmen laugh with a small silent gesture, but once Justin’s mom hears laughter she start to cry moving her dearest away. The dinner had started tense and towards the ends everyone breaks making things really uncomfortable. The dinner end when someone knocks on the door and Mr. Wincott rudely gets up to open the door.

  39. The meal from the beginning of “The Hobbit” has a lot of meaning to the story. Bilbo, the main character, is visited by an assortment of dwarves who eat all of his food and cause chaos in his home. He is the only person present that seems to have any sort of control over their actions. The dwarves entering Bilbo’s too-small home show what will happen on the later quest. Bilbo is being overwhelmed by the happenings around him that are much bigger and rowdier than he is used to. He has to leave his comfort zone in order to complete his job. The Dwarves eating all of his food is showing that he has to work hard for them to see him as their equal. They eat up all of the reasons that he gives them and only want more. The chaos in his home alludes to the chaos that will engulf his life and the only world he’s ever known. At the end of the story it is shown that the Dwarves are easily corruptible by power and that Bilbo is the only one that really keeps trying to stay calm and finish the task he was given to steal from the dragon, or to keep everyone at the meal in the beginning calm and fed. He has to work hard to keep the peace. This dinner nonetheless shows that they are one united force and will finish their meal together.

One of my favorite book/movie is The Help. In this literary piece, it deals with the Civil Rights movement and shows how we should treat a person right in general, regardless of their race or ethnicity. What happens in this great book/movie, is that Skeeter, a struggling writer comes home to Jackson, Mississippi from College and notices some things that she does not believe are right. One of the things is how her childhood friends treat their maids or the hired help. Two of the hired help really stick out to her. These strong women are Minny Jackson (Hilly Holbrook’s maid) and Aibileen Clark (Elizabeth Leefolt ’s maid and Nanny). Fast forward just a bit the the turning point of the movie where Skeeter decides to write a book and enlist in the help of Minny and Aibileen to tell the story of their lives as colored women and working for different families over the years (all families are white). During this time period, Hilly treats her help, Minny absolutely horrible and she fires her. Minny then goes to Celia Foote’s home in search of work. Celia’s husband is Hilly’s ex, therefor Hilly treats Celia absolutely horrible. After many different blows toward Celia, Minny grows tired of Hilly’s crap. Minny is famous for her chocolate pies and decides to bring one to Hilly. However, Hilly may think this is an act of goodwill and Minny asking for forgiveness, it is not because after Minny refuses to give any pie to Hilly’s momma, the audience finds out by three simple word (“eat my...poop”) that Minny does not play around. The event of Minny bringing the pie to Hilly may have looked like an act of communion (breaking bread… or poop pies) at first, but was not nice at all.

  41. I don’t really know any books where they are having a meal and communicate properly in but I do know a great movie. The movie “ Juice” that was recommended to me by Alana was a great movie. They were a group of friends who would do many reckless things together. They went to a bar and only one went inside. They saw and old friend and it was totally normal until he pulled out a gun because he was invading the bar. They all leave and go to a friend’s house. They went to Steel’s house and he made them some weird meal that involved eggs with ketchup and other things. While watching the news together, the friend from the bar was killed. Bishop was the one tempted to go in with him and got very upset that they didn’t let him. He got into an argument with Q and they found out how Bishop really was. He had awful anger issues and noticed that he was insane. At the end, Bishop dies but kills all his friends except two which were Q and Steel (Steel got shot.)

    This Christmas

I couldn't really think a book but a movie that focused on a meal was "This Christmas", where a mother invites all of her children home to Christmas. Each child is having their own problems and a main part in the movie is the dinner where everyone's secrets and problems are revealed. But in the end one of last scenes is the last dinner where they all come together and celebrate.

In the book The Summer I Turned Pretty everyone in the beach house sits down at the table each night and eats together. There was a time when Conrad kept sneaking looks at Belly and every time she would look back, he would look away. Right after that, she wanted to tell him that she would always be there for him. Before this event, Belly and Conrad had a moment together and it showed that they were still in love with each other but they didn’t want to admit it. This happened on the very last night everyone was at the beach house.
