  1. Memory, symbol, and pattern affect the readers literature by separating the reader from the crowd itself and doing this can give the reader a different outlook by seeing things they only want to see. When it comes to the reader reading complicated literature, the recognition of patterns can signal to the reader that this and that is happening thus having a future reading of what the events will conclude too. Once I was read a book called "Where the Red Fern Grows" and one of the dogs named Old Dan was injured really badly while defending his loyal owner named Billy and sadly died. This was seen in my life by the continuation of events from other movies and books as well and this was a surprise but not an unexpected surprise. This was due to the fact that everything rising from bad to good never lasts so long before the irony of life kills it all.

    1. I love that book also, I read it in the eighth grade and it is one of the best books ever. I agree that nothing seems to last very long in a movie or literary work before something happens to destroy it.

    2. I really love Where the Red Fern Grows and I was glad to also have seen the film adaptation of it. I agree with what you said about how it was a surprise but not an unexpected surprise. In other books and films the end comes as a surprise but at the same time you already knew what was coming because of the events leading up to it.

    3. I remember the first time I ever read that book and I literally cried. I like your example because it really does shock one but at the same time, you already knew what was going to happen. Everything that was not happening yet helped one understand what would happen and it stills gets one shocked.

  2. Memory helps with the use of symbolism since the reader will remember the usage of symbolism to certain settings and characters and even items in the story also to help the readers memorize the usage of symbolism the authors use pattern to etch the details into the readers memory. Also the recognition and understanding of the patterns in literature help decide its genre and its author's styles of writing as well and understanding that allows a greater comprehension of the literature piece as a whole, it also helps identify literary sarcasm as well. One time when this has helped me was every time I have read Manga, even though the faces of the characters is shown I usually do not look at them until I have read the words on the panel.

Memory, symbol, and pattern are all things to consider while reading literature. They all come together to help the reader with connecting and ponder the book. With the help of memory, we can relate the book with one that we have previously read therefore, join it with a comparable topic. By perceiving examples inside convoluted writing, we can center not on the numerous points of interest of the book, but rather the essential ones that can offer us some assistance with further comprehending of the novel. Regularly now and again, images can offer you some assistance with understanding a novel more. Once an image inside of a novel is discovered and broke down, it can reveal another insight into what the novel is about. For instance, in Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the Grinch takes the icons of Christmas, similar to trees, presents and food, to figure out at last Christmas was more than those things. That book really stood out to me from an early age because it symbolized that for someone to have a great Christmas, you don’t have to have all the gifts or money. It’s enough to be surrounded by others who care about you.

Memory, symbol and pattern affect the reading of literature drastically. Understanding symbolism and recognizing patterns helps distinguish an inexperienced reader from someone who has some education in literary aspects. Being able to recognize patterns while reading complicated literature helps the reader better understand the underlying messages the author is trying to portray to the reader. For example, In both the book and film adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie is used to standing on the sidelines and watching life pass him by. He observes others and is truly a “wallflower.” However, when he travels through a tunnel, he expresses that he is living in the moment and that he feels infinite. The tunnel that he travels through is a symbol of his journey from being someone who just sits around and watches everyone else to an active participant and someone who enjoys life. Recognizing this about the novel helped me appreciate the overall message that the author, Stephen Chbosky, was trying to get across with the symbolic representation of the tunnel.

  5. As it says in the book "Memory. Symbol. Pattern. These are the three items that, more than any other, separate the professorial reader from the rest of the crowd.", which means that the people that can see patterns, symbols and have good memory will be able to understand literature more than the people who don't. (Foster 15). "Literature is full of patterns" (Foster 16), so if you understand the pattern it would make it a hole lot easier to understand the literature. A long time ago I was reading "The Giving Tree" and it was a very repetitive story about a tree who was taking care of a little boy and in the end she gave away all she had to make the boy happy. I knew that in the end the tree would have nothing left because the boy kept coming back and taking more from the tree.

Memory can affect literature by linking moments of the past to what will occur in the future. Memory can also link the reader's personal past to the story as well. Symbolism allows the reader to link events in a story to alternative representations, such as another story. Pattern can allow the reader to figure out what occurs next in a story. When a reader can recognize a pattern, the reader doesn't need to put as much focus into figuring out what occurs next. This way, the reader doesn't need to hold on to as much detail, and allows them to focus on other parts of the story, which may become important later on. Patterns have helped me appreciate work in the past, but not necessarily in books. I'll use video game examples, as in my opinion, they count as a type of literary work, due to the fact that it could be made, or has been made, into a book. This example also applies to some movies, and probably a few books. Let's say the main protagonist and the antagonist, main or minor, meet at a "shady location" to perform a trade of some sort. This trade could be for a loved one, some important thing the protagonist or antagonist needs, or some other material. Due to past examples in other video games or movies, most people can expect that there will be some sort of betrayal. This occurs a lot in war-based video games, or movies with kidnappings involved. Because of this, it allows me to remember other key details, and figure out what occurs next. It allows me to focus on what I need to do in the game, or to try and figure out if the scene was entirely necessary in the movie.

    1. That type of scene is very common in literature, but the majority of times I see these I think of fights or murder which is just an extent of betrayal.

  7. Memory, symbol, and pattern are ways to change how a piece of literature is interpreted, both positively and negatively. The connection of memories, the understanding of symbols, and the recognition of patterns can give a person more insightful views and opinions of a piece of literature.

Through the recognition of patterns, a complex piece of literature can be made much easier to understand. The use of repetition throughout many literary works allows readers to break down plots by comparing them

One of my favorite books is Johnathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach and my appreciation of this book was already very high after the first time I completed this book. Upon my completion of this book the second time around, my appreciation of this book was much higher due to my recognition of a symbolic action alluding to a principal of Buddhism.

Memory, symbol, and pattern affect the reading of literature in many ways. Understanding these three key components of literature are essential to understanding literature because memory helps a reader see patterns shown in the past and in the present. Once a reader recognizes these patterns he/she will be able to better understand the message the author is trying to give without actually giving the message. Symbolism affects the reading of literature by showing one thing that holds a greater meaning, for example the Mockingjay in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The Mockingjay is first thought to be just a bird, but then while reading the book the reader finds out that the bird is a hybrid created by the Capitol. The bird symbolizes rebellion because the bird broke free from the Capitol, kind of like Katniss. Also in this literary work readers get to see into the past of Katniss. We see her mother, and how they lived, reminding the reader how Katniss and her sister became so close. Knowing the details of the past helps the reader understand many of the decisions Katniss makes throughout the novels. This helped me know why Suzanne Collins decided to use a Mockingjay pin throughout the novel. It was purposeful, it was foreshadowing that the future Katniss would rebel against the Capitol.

Recognizing patterns may help the reader understand complicated literature because it can show the reader that the pattern is likely to continue and that the reader should continue to look for the patterns.

    1. I agree that seeing Katniss as the Mockingjay could help the reader find out or guess what will happen further on in the movie. As you stated the Mockingjay symbolizes rebellion, which could let the reader guess that a mass rebellion will occur against the Capitol. The whole movie is about rebelling against something you don't believe in and standing up for yourself.

To understand literature you must know the different components that make literature up, memory, symbol, and pattern. Literature is a complicated subject because to understand it you must know how to break it down into different components. The main components of literature is memory, symbol, and pattern.
When reading literature it may be confusing to the reader, so one of the first things the reader should do is look for a pattern. Some of the patterns may include repeating itself or have a written out text and then analysing it. If the reader figures out the pattern in the beginning of the book the better the reader will understand it.
When reading a book and understanding the symbol or pattern in the beginning then it will help me engage into the book. If I do not recognize the symbol or pattern in the beginning then it will not catch my attention. All good literature books, will allows you to recognize the pattern in the beginning.

  10. How do memory, symbol, and pattern affect the reading of literature?

    Post By: Kayla Shannon
Memory, symbol, and pattern set apart the professional reader from everyone else. Memory is something that is gained over time for readers. The more you read and experience, the more your memory will wander and expand.

As a reader, everything is a symbol of something. A character, a monster, a season - it all means something, it all symbolizes something in the book, and as you read, it will become more clear to you.

Lastly, there is pattern, which literature is full of. As you grow in your reading life, patterns will start to become more and more important. Once you see a certain trait and you notice it repetitively, you start to put together the patterns and that helps you grow even more. Recognition of patterns helps you connect things more that you typically wouldn't.

While reading A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, I never really took in to consideration the tattoo of the eye on his ankle, but as time went on in the books, I began to understand that this was a symbol that no matter where Violet, Klaus, and Sunny went, he would always have his eye on them until he got them back and had his way with them.

  11. When reading a piece of literature, it is very important to use different techniques when analyzing the text. According to the novel How to Read Literature like a Professor, Thomas Foster explains that the reader can use memory, symbol, and pattern to look past the simple actions of the characters to discover the true meaning behind the actions (xv). If one is reading complicated literature, the different patterns and symbols can help the reader connect the harder text with familiar concepts or stories. This makes it easier to understand the storyline and predict what will happen in the future. These techniques can be used in all stories, such as the Harry Potter series. An important symbol in this series is the lighting shaped scar on Harry Potter's forehead. He received this scar after Lord Voldemort tried to kill him as a child. However, it was not some silly scar. It symbolizes his strength and acts as a badge of honor. As a child, Harry was strong enough to withstand the powers of Lord Voldemort and get away with only a small scar. By utilizing techniques such as memory, symbol, and patterns, one can find deep meanings behind many things in literature.

    3. Your Harry Potter reference is a great example. That's how I see the mark too, at least after reading through the book and thinking about it. Before I wouldn't think of it as more than a unique feature to differentiate Harry, but now I can see what it is supposed to symbolize.

  12. Memory, symbol, and pattern affect the reading of literature because the mind makes connections to past experiences and previously read ideas. The recognition of patterns makes it easy to comprehend more complex texts. This is so because when our brains approach a difficult task, we try to find simple ways to do things. Our brains make connections to topics we already have knowledge on and we find ways to understand complicated literature. A symbol in a literary work I appreciate would be famous last words in Looking For Alaska by John Green. The last words are symbolic because the main character, Miles Halter, loves people’s last words and when Alaska, Miles love interest, passes he never got to know her last words. This is symbolic because last words are a known thing to the readers that he enjoys and not knowing Alaska’s is devastating.

  13. Memory, symbol, and pattern affect the way literature is read by giving each person a different experience. Without memory of something else, people would have nothing to compare the literature to, and symbol and pattern would not have an effect. If not for symbols, the work of literature would be just a story. The symbols make people have more connections to their memories, thus making memory even more important to all works of literature. Patterns are just as important, yet still interlinked with, memory and symbols. When reading literature, one might notice a similar trend from a different work of literature, and connect these two pieces for a more interesting and fruitful experience.

The patterns of literature can make most any piece of literature easier to understand. Noticing a pattern between authors can make the second book/movie/etc. easier to understand, and probably more enjoyable. Patterns in the plot can help people see similarities in symbols and general ideas of the literature.

One instance in which my understanding of pattern assisted my appreciation of a literary work was when reading The Count of Monte-Cristo. Previously having read The Three Musketeers series meant that when reading The Count of Monte-Cristo, I found many similarities in certain elements of the plot and, of course, in the writing style, because the author is the same. One of the main instances of one of these similarities is the theme of the books. In The Count of Monte-Cristo Dante is out for revenge, but he does so in a well orchestrated way. Similarly, in The Three Musketeers sequel, Twenty Years after, the son of Milady de Winter (the antagonist of The Three Musketeers), Mordaunt, is out for revenge for and goes about it in a similar way. This similarity show me that this author uses this as a common theme in his works.

  14. Pattern, symbol, and memory occur in every work to date. Whether the writer is aware or not, it is highly likely that they will invoke idea in the mind of the reader that cause them recollect of their past experiences. We as readers are constantly reminded of previous stories due to our own minds capabilities to connect strings of knowledge and data. The mind's taste for literature grows like a weed. Minerals it collects can relate to story patterns. Oh another horror movie comes into view; with our previous knowledge of these minerals to our plant of a brain we can defer the pattern of what happens next. What the idiot dies? We all saw this coming. Symbols to plants could be along the lines of gardeners or bugs. To begin with the latter, we are normally introduced to a main villain early in a story by heinous acts and wrong doings that somehow impact the main character; we can differentiate his motives and intentions from our main cast. Contrary, our gardener represents friends, helper, and nurturers to our character that will help them grow to best fit the role the tale requires of them. These symbols may often be recognized in roles of friends and family. All aforementioned information above stems back to the plant itself. Despite being barely animate object, we can identify how it is affected by all of these symbols and patterns with our previous knowledge. All this data comes from the memories of our minds.

Complicated literature stands of a bit more unrecognizable taste. Nowadays roles of heroes and villain may change and fold as the writer sees fit. These novelist may seek to lead us into a false sense of security with us thinking we know it all and out of nowhere give us the surprise of our lives. Often times what truly a hard literature difficult is its use of pattern. We rip the wool from our eyes if just look beyond the action patterns of a character and get absorbed into the world as a whole. If we see pattern of impact of their actions, we will be able to better grasp the author's intentions in hard literature. Once we understand patterns as a whole, we will be able to better recollect the story and identify key plot points and people with fantastic ease.

A book read a couple years ago was The Good Thief. In this small novel, a boy is adopted by a man who somewhat symbolizes the devil. Like Walter Lee, who was discussed in this chapter, our protagonist is tempted with an offer he can not refuse due to his circumstances, the life of thief. After a long journey full of exciting actions, our protagonist gets the wealth he strives for that our devil promised, but at what cost to the boy. Following the known pattern, the boy has had to witness countless deaths, endure imprisonment, and even watch several of his close friends be injured and some very brutally murdered. Yes, it makes a u-turn very end and defies the pattern with a somewhat happy ending, but the kid is still struck with memories of tragedies that befell him.

Memories, symbols, and patterns are vital to the understanding of literature. These things help readers to understand not only the basic topics, but also some of the deeper details. When reading literary texts that could be considered difficult, it is important to look for patterns that make it easier to keep up and anticipate what is going to be said or is going to happen.

An example of a time where symbolism affected the way I saw something was in the novel Twilight. The cover of the book shows an apple, and at first I believed it was simply that; however, when reading the book, it is clearly more. The apple symbolizes one of the book's biggest themes as a whole, which is temptation. In the biblical story Adam and Eve, an apple is given by Satan in the form or temptation and throughout Twilight the male lead, goes through the stages of temptation because he shouldn't be with the protagonist. This whole idea changed the way I perceived the novel because after that, it was more than just a love story.

And Edward wanted to be traditional and marry her and resisted sleeping with her but, Bella didn't want that. Don't get me wrong, just like the bible the male was equally, if not more tempted and was at just as much fault but, the woman caved first,

  18. Memory, symbols, and patterns are all very important aspects when reading literature. To be able to memorize certain facts in literature can greatly increase the reader's understanding of the book. Being able to recognize that an object is more than simply just that object and that it actually stands for something can cause the reader to understand and connect on deeper level with literature. When reading a piece of literature if a specific thing or event shows up the reader probably won’t think much of it, but if it continues to show up and a pattern starts to develope, then the reader will notice it and decide it is an important thing to remember.

When reading the "Pretty Little Liars" series one of the main characters gets a note about something only they would know and it’s signed off with “A.” One by one all four girls received a letter or text signed “A” and I instantly recognized the pattern. In this series it’s important to take into consideration when and where the girls receive these notes, since the whole storyline starts to develop around this unknown “A.”

Memorizing, finding symbolism, and spotting patterns are what allows a person to have a greater awareness of literature. Those skills can show the story's meaning; the underlying factors of what the piece of literature can actually be saying about the plot, the characters, and the resolution. Being able to memorize and recognize, makes complicated literature so much easier to understand because it is the secret to literature.

I am a huge fan of the Star Wars franchise so I find a lot of symbolism in the Jedi and the Sith. My appreciation was greatly enhanced when I discovered the symbolism for good and evil within the series. It might be an obvious sign of symbolism, but it goes deeper. The Jedi are the good and are afraid of being tainted and seduced to the dark side by their darker feelings. The Sith embrace their dark feelings and allow them to control their lives. The symbolism could be reflected onto the struggles on a person with their internal feelings. Understanding this symbolism allowed be to have a greater connection to the characters and their struggles in the movies (and novels). I could reflect my own emotions on the characters and events, it made the experiences around the franchise all the better.

Memory, symbol, and pattern affect the reading of literature because they help you be able to compare the literature to other literature you've seen before and grasp a better understanding. Being aware of those elements in the story can make it more enjoyable so that it's not just a boring tedious assignment. Memory helps you make connections to other things you've read or seen before. If you're stuck reading something you don't understand but remember another piece of literature that is similar it'll be easy to make the connection and have a better understanding. Symbolism leads the way to the underlying theme. Finally, identifying patterns makes it easier to know what will happen in the future. Once you catch on to the pattern you're able to predict what will happen next, almost like repetition. Patterns make it easier to understand complicated literature because it makes it a lot more predictable so you don't have to think too much about it. When I read "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe, I realized that there was ironic symbolism because Fortunado means "the fortunate one" in Italian and Fortunado was dressed as a court jester, but in the end he met a very unfortunate fate and was the one that got fooled. It helped me understand Montresor's intentions and the irony of it.

No complaints about your text and I would keep in mind that some pieces of literature do have ironic twists no matter the pattern.

Memory affects the reading of literature because once someone has seen, heard, or read a work memory will bring you back to all the other moments that person has seen, heard, or read a work similar to the one he/she is reading at that moment. After memory takes he/she through the moment or moments that he/she seen, heard, or read a similar work, he/she will start to compare and contrast the works, helping the reader understand the work or works better.
Symbol affects the reading of literature because when reading a piece of literature almost everything represents another item for example in the book “Where the Red Fern Grows” (Wilson Rawls) the fern is just a plant but it is a very special plant therefore as the reader you look for the further meaning of the fern. The ferns symbolizes something very memorable or special.
Lastly pattern affects the reading of literature because it helps the reader find the most important details and the not, so, important details of a piece of literature. Pattern uses the details to help the reader connect two or more pieces of literature. The recognition of pattern makes it easier to read complicated literature because if the reader can connect the complicated literature with a piece of literature he/she understands through pattern then the reader will be likely to understand the complicated literature due to the patterns in the two pieces of literature.
A time when a literary work was enhanced by understanding symbolism was in the TV series “Supernatural”. In the series one of the main characters named Dean is looking for a tablet of angels but an angel named Castiel is also looking for the tablet of angels and when they find the tablet Castiel is forced to fight and kill Dean but luckily Castiel is able to break the bond and save his friend, Dean. Castiel breaking the bond between the woman controlling him and himself to save Dean symbolizes the bond between Castiel and Dean, a bond powerful enough to break evil.

  22. Memory, symbol, and Pattern are very important when reading a literature. Memory, when reading a literature, help the person remember other literature that have similar theme or characters. Symbol in a literature can represent something important or another thing. Pattern is also important in a literature. As you keep on reading, we will find something like the character's attitude or the plot is like the other literature have read which can help us interpret more complex literature.

One time, I was reading Percy Jackson and the lightening thief. Percy Jackson was just a little boy around 12 and is a troublemaker. Even though Percy is small and not as strong as the other people, he soon discovered he had the amazing power to control water and ending up saving the day. In the end, I realized Percy is a symbol in the book meaning that a hero doesn't have to be super strong or buff. A hero can an ordinary people like us doing something to help other people and that all of us have some amazing power.

Memory, symbol and pattern are all key elements into writing and reading a piece of literature, mainly one with a plot or storyline. Memory allows the reader to make connection to other pieces of literature they have read beforehand, Symbols within literature create a deeper meaning and understanding to scenes that may happen within the story. Patterns set the stage for following the plot structure of a story, typically making it easier to read if patterns in literature are similar. The recognition of patterns makes it easier to read complicated literature because patterns enable us as readers to connect the characters, the actions they take and other topics in the story that we can apply to ideas we have gathered outside that particular story. The more we read, the more we become familiar with literary elements used within literature, and once we are used to a certain pattern, it will then be easier to understand.

A time when my appreciation of literary work was enhanced by understanding symbol and pattern was during the first time I read “Every Day” by David Levithan. I really enjoy the way that this story was structured and I loved the plot of it as well. The pattern was easy to follow, every chapter was a journal entry based on every day of the protagonist’s life. I appreciated how the story went and how everything was laid out, everything tied to one another and went smoothly. The story symbolizes and makes it evident that it’s what’s on the inside that counts when you love someone, regardless of what they look like. Rhiannon’s dedication to being with “A” makes that very clear since she stays with him every day, when he’s a girl, a boy, obese, anorexic, white or black, she still wants to be with “A,” who has not identified as either gender (since A lives in a different persons body each day).

  24. As stated by Thomas C. Foster, memory, symbol, and pattern “ are the three items that, more than any other, separate the professional reader from the rest of the crowd” (pg. xv). These different items allow the reader to look at things from a different view point. It also allows them to question themselves and better connect with the piece of literature. Recognizing the patterns can make it easier for one to read and better understand complicated literature. When the reader understands the pattern, they are able to take in the foreground detail while also noticing the patterns that they reveal.

These are things that can enhance one's appreciation of a literary work. In the film The Hunger Games the competitors rode in on chariots and wore different types of clothing. My appreciation of this film was enhanced by using my understanding of symbolism. When the competitors rode in on their chariots, I was able to infer and understand where the different people came from and what their district was mainly known for without any verbal explanation.

  25. Memory, symbol, and pattern affect reading literature in many diverse ways. Memory can help the reader connect characters or themes to other works of literature they have previously read or watched. Symbol can be used in literature to represent something major, like a theme, character traits, etc. that can lead readers to better understand the literature. Pattern can be very helpful in literature because readers can connect other pieces of literature to one another based on their similar patterns.
I enjoyed the book The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green because of all the symbolism. Death was a major theme in the book and one of the main characters Augustus was dying of cancer. Yet, he carried around a cigarette that he put in his mouth, only to never light. Augustus said it was a metaphor, “You put the killing thing in between your teeth, but you don’t give it the power to do its killing.” I better understood Augustus through this work of symbolism; He was dying of cancer and had no control over it, however he had complete control over the cigarette and got to determine his own fate based on what he did with it.

  26. Memory, symbols, and patterns affect reading in many ways, for instance you need memory for any type of comprehension of the reading material. Symbols are very helpful for a reader because symbols are used to make patterns and to make connections with previous memories. Patterns are also very important because for many people patterns can create a base point for memory and symbols.
In my opinion patterns make it easier to read more complex literature because you can make connections with other works which can give you a new level of understanding the literature.
A time when my appreciation of literature was enhanced was when reading “The Phantom of the Opera” by Gaston Leroux. I made many connections with the characters of the book. For example Erik (the phantom) you can connect to a fugitive, or a character from “Among the Hidden”, in the sense of always being hidden from the outside world. Also Christine could be connected with say the princess of “The Beauty and the Beast”. Finally the character Raoul could be considered the knight in shining armor because he ends up saving Christine from Erik.

  27. Memory affects the reading of literature by helping you connect to different things like stuff that you have read/seen before. For example, if I am reading Harry Potter and something happens that has happened before but to someone else in a different story or movie, then I am connecting one memory to another. Another way that it helps is by recognizing patterns, that then brings us to how patterns can affect the reading of literature. Patterns reveal more detail and hidden truths/meanings. Symbols affect the reading of literature by seeing something but meaning another. Such as the example that is in the book, Grendel is a monster who symbolizes how hostel the universe is. The recognition of patterns in complaciated literature helps make it easier for the reader because once they have seen the same pattern over and over. It helps them understand more of what is going on by seeing the same pattern. It reveals more detail and lets the reader have a better understanding of the literature. Once in middle school while reviewing for the EOG's, we were going over a poem that symbolized the Garden of Eden. I can't remember what the poem was titled nor the author, but understanding what the symbolism in the poem was talking about. I was able to connect to what it was actually saying.

  28. Memory, symbols, and pattern affect readers and literature in many ways simply because there are many forms to interpret literature as an whole. For example if applied to a book and a reader, memory would give the reader more understanding of the plot and the characters. A symbol would give the reader a more clear connection with events. Patterns help because it gives an repeat of something helping an reader connect two things and give a reader a enlightenment moment . For example in The Host the protagonist Melanie is changed into an alien yet Melony herself has stayed in her head when she escapes and reaches the hideout where humans are at they all hate her because of her eyes in this movie neon blue eye are an symbol of a alien in the body this would helped clarify some event for me. -Stephanie Martinez

  29. Memory, symbol, and Patterm are all important factors in literature. Memory helps readers to relate the new book, movie, or show, to something they have seen or read in the past. Without memory, readers would not be able to understand literature as well as they do; they would not have the past knowledge to help them out. Symbol is an important aspect of literature becauseit allows the creator of the work to hide meaning in otherwise normal, or unrelated, things. Pattern affects literature in a similar way to memory. It allows for easier understanding of the things being read or watched. Pattern familiarizes, and adds repitition to the work.

The recognition of patterns makes it easier to read complicated literature by repeating aspects or ideas previously used in literature. This helps the reader to better understand what they are taking in because they are able to relate it to previous works of literature.

Patterns allowed my appreciation of a book called "Just Ella" to enhance when I stared to notice the similarities it had to other Disney movies and fairytales. The main character, Ella, was treated the same as Disney's "Cinderella" was treated. She ended up running away and going through a lot of trouble to be with her "Prince Charming," who wasn't really a prince. Ella also had to defeat a giant man, who wanted to do her harm, which seemed to me, like a symbol and a pattern at the same time. It was a pattern similar to "Jack And The Bean Stalk." She was searching for something she wanted, her lover, just the same as Jack was searching for something he wanted, the goose. In the end, they both were forced to defeat the giants.
I believe it was a symbol because she was scared of her situation, and after she defeated the giant, she wasn't afraid of anything. Ella was on top of the world. The giant was symbolic of her fear, and when she killed him, that weas her overcoming those fears.

When a piece of literature is complicated it can be difficult for the novice reader to understand. However, recognizing patterns and symbols will help the reader make connections to previously read novels.

My appreciation of a literary work was once enhanced by understanding of the pattern. When I was watching a movie titled ‘American Ultra’ it reminded me of a book series ‘The Hunger Games’. In “The Hunger Games” the purpose for characters to fight for their lives to get a lifetime supply of food. Throughout both movies there is a lot of fighting for your life. Memory, symbol and pattern are very powerful literary elements. Memory can help you understand the story easier or make an educated guess at what happens next by recalling a book or movie with a similar situation or story. Symbols can foreshadow an upcoming event by showing something that can be related to a certain feeling or event. A pattern can show what may happen next by showing a string of events that happen in a specific order more than once.

Symbolism is a major part of many books and movies, one significant symbol being The One Ring in “The Lord Of The Rings" series by J. R. R. Tolkien. The One Ring represents power and greed, for whoever is in possession of the ring can become corrupted and wish to keep the ring for themselves. One of the longest owners of the ring, Gollum, used to be a peaceful hobbit. When he first found the ring however it changed him, to the point of him killing his friend for it and hiding away for years so no one could take the ring from him. Memory also helps you tell what happens next, as the same thing almost happens to the protagonist, Frodo, when he becomes The One Ring’s owner.

  32. Memory, symbol and patterns all play an important factor in literary elements. Memory can help a reader make connections with previously read material. It can also help a reader make connections with things that may have happened previously in the book. Patterns in a book are also very important. They can help a reader by showing them possible events that may occur in the future. Symbolism can show a feeling or a message in literature.

Symbolism is a major part in the book series The Hunger Game by Suzanne Collins. The symbol is the mockingjay that was used by the protagonist Katniss. The mockingjay represents freedom. When Katniss volunteered to be in the games she was allowed to bring one thing from home. She choose to bring a pin that had the picture of the mockingjay. After the events of the second novel the image of the bird is used by the rebels and the people of the capitol. The reason why it is an important symbols is due to the fact that it is the symbol for the rebels and since she has won the games the people of the Capitol want to wear the symbol to show that they have something the victor also had.

Memory, symbol, and pattern affects the reading of literature because it helps the reader understand the book more and because it seperates the proffesional from the ametuer. While reading a book, your mind wonders to familiar things and it makes a connection with them. If I was reading a novel about a girl who met her soulmate by just losing something of hers and him finding it then that would automatically remind me of my memory of Cinderella. Memory makes connections. Symbolism is another big thing in movies and books. My 8th grade Language Arts teacher told me that, it acts to string the theme and the story together. Itś kind of like when you say a picture is worth a thousand words. The mockingjay sign or pin in The Hunger Games, is a symbol. It is a symbol of rebellion. The Capital created the mockingjay as an experiment but Katniss Everdeen turned it around and used it to get others to rebell. Patterns can be seen with memory. You might see something in a book repeatedly and think, hey Ivé seen this before. Then you will look deeper into it because it is an important piece of the book. When you see all the patterns it makes the book easier to read because the patterns help you figure the whole thing out. I once read a book called, Eve. Throughout the book there was this one line that repeated. It was, I love you, I love you, I love you. That line helped me figure out the meaning of the whole book. The book was about love and the sacrifices that came with it.

  34. Memory, symbol, and pattern affect the reader by allowing them connect a concept to a previous concept. This makes the literature easier to understand and comprehend because the reader already has an idea of the concept from the prior concept they are connecting.
As previously stated, recognition of patterns makes complicated literature easier to read because it allows the reader to understand the concept because they have read the concept in a previous work. It gives the reader insight on what will happen, so they will not be as confused.
There is a short story called “Squares Are Not Bad” about a group of different shapes that think they are superior to each other because of their own traits. The triangles think they are superior to the squares, circles, and rectangles because they have three sides. Eventually the shapes discover that if they work together they can create objects like wagons and trees. This is obviously a symbol for racism, classism, etc. and how everyone would get along if we worked together and stopped separating ourselves. It would not carry the same message if you did not recognize the symbolism, enhancing the story.

Memory, symbol, and pattern help you better understand what you’re reading. Patterns allow the reader to see the relation between different characters and ideas within the book. Long sentences may be confusing when you first read a book, but once you get accustomed to the author’s style of writing, it is easier to read.

I associate the symbol of hope with the literary work, A Raisin in the Sun. This story portrays a few weeks in the life of a struggling family in the 1950s. Mama, one of the main characters, has a plant that sits on a window sill. Plants need sunlight in order to survive and I see this as a symbol of hope or a need being filled. The plant can also be considered a symbol of growth.

  37. Memory, symbol, and pattern affect the reading of literature in different ways and it all depends on the person who is reading the book. Recalling different memories, patterns, and symbols, will affect the perspective of the reader immensely because each reader will see something different (from what they recall) whether it be characters or scenery.

To me, the recognition of patterns not only makes it easier to read complicated literature, but it also aids in predicting what will happen next. For example, last summer, I read The Fault In Our Stars by John Green, and although that book isn't too complex, I recognize a pattern the book had within it which made it overall more enjoyable and easier to predict the outcome.

In a book that has two people who both have some form of cancer, it isn't that hard to know someone was going to die, and in this book, Augustus Waters mentions how he fears oblivion. He also touches on the subject of death many time, so throughout the book, it was easy to catch on that cancer would end up taking himself or his lover, Hazel Grace.

  41. When a reader is able to compare a piece of literature that they are reading to something that they have seen at one point they are automatically able to pinpoint the plotlines and possibilities of the story that they may not have seen otherwise. The reader can better guess what will happen later in the narrative and will have a wider understanding of what they are reading. When I first watched the movie “Bolt,” a story about a dog that is separated from its owner and goes on a journey to find them, it struck me as very familiar. The reason for this was its obvious similarity to the book “Lassie Come-Home,” which I had read a few years before. Both of these detail the exploits of a very loyal dog that is separated from their family. Said dog then has to find a way to get back to their family while they traverse unfamiliar terrain. Both Lassie and Bolt have a friend that helps them escape from their initial imprisonment. Lassie is helped to leave by the granddaughter of the man that purchased her from her family. Bolt escapes from the thought that he has super powers when Mittens helps him come to grips with the fact that he is a normal dog. After both canines are assisted in their change of placement and mindset they are able to return to their family and everyone involved comes to an understanding that the group does not need to be broken up again. This enriched my enjoyment of the movie because I had a better grip on the story and plot.

Memory, symbol, and pattern all affect how the reader interrupts and views a piece of literature. When recognizing these, the reader can dig a bit deeper in the meaning behind certain patterns and symbols within the story.

While reading, I tend to steer away from trying to purposely spot patterns because it can distract me from reading the story. Though it can help me understand it more, I like to read without having to think too much when it comes to symbols and such.

Memory, symbol, and pattern are some aspects that are truly important when reading or writing literature. All of these things help with putting the whole book together and making it very interesting.
When dealing with memory, symbols and patterns, it’s a way of memorizing a previous book or article (anything) that you have read and compare and contrast it to the book you’re reading now with the symbols and patterns it has offered while reading into the book. This helps for when you’re reading something new, you can connect with the book before and in a way helps you understand similar things in the new book. Images, drawings, or anything visual that isn’t a “word” can help understand a novel or a short story much better. Memory will help link certain symbols about books together and help comprehend certain patterns that are given.
A book that stood out to me was the "Wintergirls" book. In this book, it helped me acknowledge that when people are depressed, it’s very easy to tell. I remember when I read about symptoms of depression and when I was reading this book, I already knew what it would be about because there were certain symbols and patterns involved that helped me figure out what was going on. The book had a lot of patterns that stood out like, her mom never helped her feel good about herself, her best friend died which caused her to give out the symptoms of depression and make her suicidal.

Memory, symbol, and pattern affect the reading of literature by constantly reminding you the message of the story. The definition of memory is "the faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information", stories with strong symbols and meanings help you remember the moral of the literature. Patterns re-enforce those morals and symbols. Without memory, symbol, and pattern a story has no true meaning or purpose. The recognition of patterns makes it easier to read complicated stories because the repetition will help "inbed" the message in your head. A time where an appreciation of a literary work was enhanced by understanding symbol or pattern was when I read "Chad's Justice", it was a story written by one of my close friends on Wattpad and I was truly shocked and impressed by the book. I used this book as an example because the symbol was that bad things can happen to good people but you should never give up. This message/symbol has stayed with me for a very long time.

I have reread multiple books and I have never quite understood them the first time around. Now knowing about memory, symbol and pattern these things make me appreciate the author more. These three items normally define a book, memory helps you to relate something to anything you have read, symbol helps the reader to see that there is something there that has a meaning behind it, and pattern lets the reader see that action that is repeating. Recognizing patterns help the reader grasp the message that the author is portraying. One of my favorite books is The Book Thief, now that I look back on it I see that one of the symbols is bread. When Max is in the storeroom his friend brings him bread. Later in the book Rudy gave bread to a Jewish prisoner. Giving bread is an act of selflessness, I clearly see that now.
