Chapter 10 -- It’s More Than Just Rain or Snow

Discuss the importance of weather in a specific literary work, not in terms of plot.

Weather can often foreshadow future events. Usually, stormy or dreary weather will result in something bad occurring, such as a death or something important going wrong. Lovely weather, such as clear skies, usually represents peace and calm.
One case of this that I can think of is in the Warriors cat series by Erin Hunter. In the series, the four clans have regular meetings in the middle of wherever they live; they lived in a forest for the first series, and lived in territory surrounding a lake for the later series. In the later series, the clans are going to meet at an island in the middle of the lake. These meetings are usually a time of peace between the clans. The weather at this point is very dreary; there is heavy rain and thundering. One clan decides to disobey the rule of peace on meeting day, and decides to attack the main character's clan. Due to spoilers, I will not say their names. During the fight, a tree gets struck by lightning, and one of the key characters of the rival clan is crushed to death by the tree. Once he is killed, the weather returns to normal.
It is later stated that due to that character disobeying the rule of peace, the cat gods (also known as Starclan) used their powers to stop the battle, or so the cats believe. The weather shows foreshadowing of something bad occurring, and it's also used as a plot element. The weather clearing shows that the foreshadowing of death has completed, and that the status quo has been restored.

The usage of weather in literature, often it is overlooked but this is one of the key elements to predicting what will happen later on in the piece, it can give the readers a hint of a death to come, a opportunity to come to be, in Final Fantasy a boss battle to come up in the next minute or two, or even the soon to come plot twist, but also the other importances of the usage of weather in literature is to emphasize on the mood of the scene or of the piece, also the usage of weather can make certain feelings in the characters to become more normal for the scene, a storm makes the emotion of happiness less eminent and the emotion of sadness and despair more eminent in the scene most of the time, and the presence of a beautiful sunset can make the emotions of happiness, affection, and joy more eminent in the scene almost always. Also in certain uses it can be used to show the meaning of the scene, it can reveal the big picture to the readers.

Weather has the power to, in my opinion, reflect the mood of a character or set the mood of the scene. While an individual is upbeat, happy it's sunny, well lighted, generally great weather. At the point when the characters are furious or he/she is a killer in the story it's generally dull and raining with thunder and lightning. In the Great Gatsby weather is initially presented in part five. Nick has tea at his home and welcomes Daisy. Upon the arrival of the day it starts to rain and it doesn’t seem to stop for the entire day. It doesn't begin to pour it just remains a steady sprinkle. I feel this speaks to Gatsby's nervousness of having the ability to reunite with Daisy. Daisy at last arrives and the downpour proceeds. Gatsby tries hard to inspire her and Daisy says nothing. I think the downpour speaks to the tension between the two and all the obstacles and changes that are present. Nick later left and came back to find Gatsby and Daisy having a great time together. The rain has stopped by then and the sun is out. The weather change represents the mood shift in the novel.

  4. Weather is a very important aspect in literature. It can represent many things and help to show the mood of the characters at the time. Rain, for example, typically sets a negative mood. Typically, sadness, nervousness, and despair are associated with rain. Another example of weather in literature is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms are also negative and tend to represent fear or anger in a story. In Snow White, when Snow's stepmother is making the potion to become the hag, and when she goes after Snow, it's storming. This really shows her fury at this time, along with the fear of the animals who know what's going on. On a positive note, sunny weather in literature usually means that all is well or that people are happy. Coudiness is a foreshadowing weather, thoug because it's cloudy before a storm, but it's also cloudy before it's sunny. Cloudiness in literature can mean either something good is going to happen, or something bad is going to happen.

Weather is the perfect metaphor in a literary work. It can foreshadow events or reflect character’s moods. If the writer needs to get a message across to the reader/viewer, weather is a great part of a setting to manipulate.

Rain, specifically, is used a lot throughout literary work to represent cleansing and transformation in a story. If there is a lot of sudden character progression, the writer may have the character walk in the rain to get somewhere that shows how they have progressed. Weather, like a lot of other things, can be manipulated in a story to produce raw depth and meaning in a specific idea.

In the film “The Notebook,” first loves Noah and Allie are reunited after breaking up years before. As they begin to catch up while taking a boat out onto the nearby lake, the two realize that like the stormy clouds, there are still feelings between one another looming around.

Suddenly, it starts pouring rain and like all great love movies, this is where all of their unpronounced feelings are expressed. They talk about how Allie never received Noah’s letters and how it was never really over for either of them. The rain is a metaphor for their unexpressed feelings toward each other. Once it starts raining, their feelings come out.

The presence of the rain in this specific work helps create anticipation and more drama in that particular scene. Without the rain, their expression of their undying love for one another would not be as dramatic and would not resonate with the audience as well.

    1. This is an interesting example. Typically rain is used in sad and dreary situations. However, in "The Notebook," rain was used to bring Allie and Noah together and establish the strength of their love for one another.

    2. Rain is mostly used to show sadness; in 'The Notebook' when the two main characters reunite it's a very sad and emotional moment. This is a great example of how weather can make an impact on a situation.

    3. This scene is so powerful and a turning point in the film. I'm very happy you mentioned it. I agree with both Tiffany and Hannah, Rain is mainly used in sad moments, but this scene is clever is uses it for another purpose.

    4. I couldn't agree more with Tiffany, Hannah, and Sofia's comments. When it rained when the two reunited, it made the feeling seem electric, and motivation. Most of time when it rains it is depressing, or upsetting, but the author made it more of a connecting moment. ~ Caleb C.

  6. When the author inserts weather into a piece of literature, it's for an event that the author is trying to foreshadow to us. First to see this clearly you must know the piece of literature from beginning to that point to get a better understanding of the clues given. In most cases weather sets an uneasy mood like in the movie The Gate where there is a gateway to hell disguised as a hole in a suburban backyard and when it's opened, it unleashes enormous amounts of energy pouring to the sky that erupts into thunder and lightning as hell overtakes the earth. Crazy things start happening at the home where the backyard is located and there is only an older teen watching over the family which is mostly younger kids while the parents are on vacation when it occurs. The event that signifies a bad effect from the hole was when the kids are running outside from scary events occurring in the house to find their parents back and they are acting weird while it turns out they were demons cloaked as their parents. One of the kids says "your home!!!" then runs and hugs the dad when their cloaked parents faces start melting and the dad starts saying "you've been bad aaaaaaaa." while trying to strangle his kid. These events signify that something bad happened since no person would say good would come from a hole in a backyard causing storms.

  7. First of the book’s in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, Rick Riordan’s book the Lightning Thief is full of weather phenomena. Camp Half-Blood is a place in the Lightning Thief that has a barrier that lets it rain only when desired. Several days after Poseidon claimed Percy as his son, notes to Chiron that it seems as though the sea and sky are fighting. Shortly thereafter, a cloud that is a part of a massive storm cell waltzes right through the barrier to camp and unleashes a torrential downpour. This occurrence is not only alarming but it also carries a heavy sense of foreboding and is expressive of the raw, uncontrollable power of nature and the fear it can invoke.

In the movie 'Aquamarine' when someone gets angry the weather starts to change and everything gets dark and stormy. This happens three times in the movie, which makes it something important to what the movie is trying to express. So whenever it gets dark and stormy in the movie the person watching will know that the main character and her father are having an argument again. This is one of my favorite movies and the effect the weather has with whats going on in movie makes it that much better. Weather tends to be something essential to stories because of the effect it has on the person watching and this is one of the examples I am using that I believe use the weather to improve the story.

Weather can make a movie you are watching. It can build anticipation or relief. Weather has the ability to foreshadow the events that are going to take place and really set them.

Thunder, lightning, and rain. When you see these in a movie, most viewers can pick up that something bad is fixing to happen. So, they prepare themselves for it because the weather let them know.

In the movie, "Olympus Has Fallen," when the President and his wife are on their way to a Christmas dinner, it is raining and thundering and snowing. While watching this, you can tell that something is going to happen because of the dark atmosphere the weather has created.

One of the cars hits a low tree branch causing it to slide out of control, thus causing all of the other Presidential cars to wreck, resulting in the car with the President's wife to slide uncontrollably on the cold, icy street and off the side of a bridge.

Let's think about this. If people were watching "Olympus Has Fallen" and it were sunny and bright, they would not expect this huge crash to happen causing a fatality. This is why weather is so important in literary work. It can really manipulate the mood and get viewers/readers in a certain state of mind.

    2. Weather never built relief for me in a movie but it does anticipate that something is going to happen which I agree with. Great definition and that example made perfect since. It is usually rare when an author has perfect sunny weather and something bad happens.

  11. "What's this? What's this?" (Tim Burton). Is something in the air? Yes it is weather! Weather is sound, weather is image, and weather is relate able. Weather is truly atmosphere. How do you engulf your audience? You throw a heavy rain storm in their face and let the mostly blue rainbow of emotion stretch across the mind. Most people can not say they have survived a nuclear explosion, but they I would say that nine out of ten of them have been in a heavy rainstorm at least twice. Weather can really bring us in and feel apart of literature with our imaginations. We are mentally tuned to experiences as humans, so that we identify emotion and past times with specific weather. Rain makes us feel quite, quite glum when we see it wash over our clean cars and occasionally ruin our day plans. Tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquake all give us a feeling that we are in grave danger and really help to escalate scenarios and instill fear. My favorite by far is snow, and it really helped to give a feeling of depth to one of favorite movies. As you expect from the aforementioned quote, I am meaning the "What's This?" song from "The Nightmare Before Christmas". Just like the seven foot tall singing skeleton on screen, we were all amazed when we first bore witness to snow as children. Not only did this weather relate to the viewer, but it also signal a change of scenery. So far, we had only seen gloomy Halloween Town, but the emphasis location itself rather than characters brought on by the weather really made the moment memorable to young minds. The movie did not need more interesting characters to get us engrossed in the visuals; Jack and the ambiance drew us in immediately. No, it was only covered in snow; you can not make good looking weather conditions with stop motion alone, but it was shown that it had been snowing in Christmas Town by locational characteristics.

When reading this chapter the movie "A Cinderella Story" was the first thing I thought of. Before reading chapter 10, it never crossed my mind that weather is so important to literature.

In every story about Cinderella, her father dies from a sickness at the beginning, and is left to be raised by her evil step-mother. Now this weather situation may not stick out automatically but her county is in a drought. Her struggles represents the counties struggle in this drought because in this movie Cinderella has to struggle to keep friends, find true love, and getting into the college of her dreams.

Near the end of this movie, all the misunderstood pieces start falling into place. She was able to find her true love, and leave her step-mother to go to the college she always wanted to go to. While this is happening her high school football team wins the championship, and right after it begins to rain. Now if you connect the pieces, after all this takes place, her struggles are over and the drought is over come by the rain.

    3. I love how you compared her wait to find true love to a drought. It makes absolute sense now. I also realized how rain is commonly used for sad moments. In this moment however, the rain was used to add a romantic tone.

Weather can change everything about a story. It lets the author make the readings feel a certain way while reading and can help them foreshadow certain events that are to come. For instance, in the book The Splendor Falls by Rosemary M., there are parts that can be very sunny and warm which can give off an exhausted or happy mood and there are parts that a storms, dark and thundering, which can make the mood turn to something scary or mysterious. There are times where the main character, Sylvie, will experience ghostly things; these are all started or followed with cold rainy weather.

In the Bible, one of the most famous stories that everyone knows is Noah's Ark. Since the Bible is a literary work, this is a good example to show how weather can affect a story. Sometimes in stories, rainbows are used as a way to show a promise or a way to keep someone's word. In Noah's Ark, God promise not to flood the earth again by showing the rainbow across the sky. The rainbow is significant to the story because it shows that God is going to keep his promise to the people. Weather cannot only affect the mood of people in real life but also in stories.

Weather is very important to many parts of a story, especially the mood. Without weather somethings may not be as dramatic as they are intended, for example if an author were to write "I walked through the park, my puppy ate my hamster, and then ran away." the effect on the reader would not be anything compared to: "As I walked through the park I seen the sky darken and felt the rain start to fall. After having my puppy run away, who ate my hamster the rain felt much wetter than it normally would.". The effect of the second was extremely different from the first just because weather was added. The first seems sad, but sadly comical. It sounds like it would come out of a comedy. The second on the other hand seems like the person has just had an awful day, and it makes readers feel sorry for them. Not only did her puppy eat her hamster and run away, but she was rained on too.

Weather is important in Forrest Gump, specifically during a big storm when Forrest Gump and Lieutenant Dan are on the shrimp boat. This was important because without the storm Dan would have never have found Jesus. The storm scared Dan so badly because they almost died, and Dan couldn’t swim. Dan said a prayer and then the next morning they were alive, and Dan could swim.

Weather holds a very high importance in all great literary works. This is due to the fact that weather helps to set the mood and atmosphere in which a story pertains to. Weather helps people connect what their reading to events that have occurred in their everyday life. Weather helps set the tone as well. For example. if you’re reading a sad scene in a story, you’ll expect there to be rain, storms, or fog outside during that moment to make it even more dreary. Most authors wouldn’t set a sad scene outside on a bright sunny day while someone’s out at a beach party, because it just wouldn’t be as upsetting. The reader wouldn’t be moved.

The importance of weather in the specific literary work, “The Odyssey” by Homer is very relevant and well-known. The Gods in this work use weather and the sea to keep Odysseus and his crew away from home. The entire story and plot revolves around the weather occurences that keep Odysseus from completing his journey, and causing destructive paths to block his way.

Another example of weather in a literary work is in Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth,” as the witches exclaim, "Fair is foul, and foul is fair: Hover through the fog and filthy air." This statement helps set the mood for the story and gives readers the gloomy and eerie feeling that the author wants us to have. Fog may open a symbol to a deep misery or depression that may be in the story. The Protagonist could also be on a quest and the fog is what keeps him from completing his mission as it serves as a bump in the road. The fog and filthy air offer a dark atmosphere as a foundation for the story.

In literature, weather can be used to the author's advantage in many ways. Different types of weather are associated with different moods, like rain and sadness or gloominess. As an example, I will use one of my favorite books "Fever 1793" by Laurie Halse Anderson. The story takes place in Philadelphia in 1793 during a yellow fever epidemic outbreak that occurred. During the months of August, it was very hot and the heat was making it easier for mosquitoes to reproduce. The mosquitoes were responsible for spreading the yellow fever during this time. As the story progresses, the people suffer many losses of friends and family due to the yellow fever. They had to suffer a lot before it all came to an end. At the end of the book on October 23rd, Matilda goes outside and sees something surprising on the ground: frost. The frost and cold weather represents the end of the suffering and the beginning of a new start where the epidemic doesn't exist. The hot weather at the beginning made everyone suffer, but the cold weather at the end put it an end to it.

Weather is not only setting but it is a way authors can express feelings. Rain can represent the rebirth of someone or something, for example an author may have a character walk through the rain to become cleansed, not cleansed as in the character was dirty and took a shower in the rain, but the character had a bad attitude and sees a new light as he/she is walking through the rain, therefore, cleansing his/her attitude to be good. Rain can also represent mystery or people coming together.

A story where weather played an important role is in “Supernatural”. In “Supernatural” there are two brothers Sam and Dean and in this particular episode there is rain and fog, Sam and Dean go to a church they had set up previously to pure the demon Crowley. By purifying a demon Sam and Dean will shut the gates of Hell once and for all. Before Sam and Dean go into the church the viewer sees there is much rain and fog, the rain and fog stand for mystery but they also stand for the two brothers finally being able to tie a loose end, thus, bringing the two brothers closer.

Weather is a really important key feature when reading a book. The weather can tell you the mood that the character is in and it can also tell you when something good or bad is about to happen, foreshadowing.
In most books if the main character is angry at another person then a big thunderstorm will usually sweep in, creating a mood. Typically when a thunderstorm sweeps in, it also indicated that something bad is about to happen. Someone is either going to get hurt or a dead will occur. Another thing is if it's really windy out then of course the doors will fly open, creating a scary dark mood.
An example is in the tv show “Psych”. It started out with shawn, gus, and shawn’s dad as riding in the car on a stormy night. Lighting strikes in the sky and then a man comes out of nowhere yelling for help. The man needed help to save a girl that was going to jump out of the window in a mental hospital. Right when the girl started to jump the boys covered their eyes and when they looked back up the girl was gone. So what I am trying to say here is that the lighting showed that something bad was about to happen, which was in this case death.

  20. Although it might not seem like it weather has a importance in literature. It can set the mood or tone, foreshadow, and even let the reader know how the character is feeling.

One example would be from a scene in “The Amazing Spider-Man.” Towards the end of the movie you see that it’s pouring down rain and it’s all dark and gloomy outside when Gwen shows up at Peter’s door. She ask Peter why he didn’t show up to her father funeral and why he’s been ignoring her. He ends up telling her that he can’t be with her anymore. Gwen starts to walk off into the rain, but turns around and ask Peter if her father made him promise to stay away from her. She walks away and Peter goes back into his house miserable.

The rain and darkness reflects how sad and down both Peter and Gwen are. She just lost her father and Peter hasn’t been there for her, while Peter’s had to stay away from the girl he loves when she really needed him.

Weather can make a scene more dramatic and flow better with what it is trying to portray. It's very important to the overall mood.

In the movie The Hunger Games, there is a scene where a younger version of Katniss is in the yard of the Mellark's family bakery. Peeta has burned a piece of bread and is in a lot of trouble because he has wasted a rationed amount of supplies, much needed by the family. When he goes to throw it outside for the animals, it is raining and he spots a less fortunate than he Katniss, trying to scavenge for food.

The gloomy weather really sets the mood for the scene because of the sadness and desperation expressed by Katniss within it. This is a perfect representation by the chosen weather.

  23. Weather can foreshadow future events or set the mood of a scene. If something good were to happen then the weather would be all nice, peaceful, sunny and calm. If something bad was to happen then the weather would be, dark looking clouds, rain, thunder and lightening.
An example would be Aquamarine. The movie is about a mermaid who wants to find love on the mainland but only haves three days to do so or her father will force her into a marriage that she doesn't want to be in. When Aquamarine or her father get mad, annoyed or frustrated, the sky starts to turn really dark and a bad storm is about to happen. And since being on the coast, a hurricane would most likely take place. Aquamarine ends up in the town's pool after her and her father got into a fight which caused a storm, and she went into the pool. Claire and Hailey find her and then help her find the love that she wants.
Another example in this movie, was when Aquamarine and her father were talking on the counch shell and they started fighting which caused the weather to turn bad.

  24. Weather in literary work can predict what happens in the future of a book or movie and can show us the mood of the scene. For example,if the weather is dark and cloudy, it means something bad or something serious is about to happen.

An example would be the book"Death Cloud" by Andrew Lane. At the end of the book, Sherlock Holmes and Virginia got kidnapped by the Baron and learn that he wants to bring England to her knees by destroying the British army in India. After Sherlock and Virginia escaped, they told Matty and Virginia's dad about it and they sail to the island where the weapons are kept even though the sky look dark and cloudy. The four eventually face the Baron's guard and doom the Baron plan.

  25. Weather is often very important it literature, it can be huge foreshadowing. For example you're watching a cute chick flick, the girl is alone and it starts raining. I don’t know about you, but the first thing I think is a guy out in the rain running to come ask for forgiveness and lastly a epic kiss.
My first example is the tv series Friends, Ross was just about to finally win over his crush since high school, Rachel. But, she sees a paper Ross has wrote and on it are the cons of dating Rachel versus staying with his current girlfriend, Julie. Rachel is hurt that he made a list of all of her flaws, so she turns Ross down. Later, it starts to rain and who do we see climbing up the fire escape of Rachel's building in the pouring rain? Ross.
Another example is the movie, A Cinderella Story. At the end of the movie when Austin finds out who mystery girl is, Sam. Problem is Austin finds out by the cheerleaders when they do a play of Sam and publicly embarrass her and Austin does nothing. Sam humiliated leaves, but at Austin's last football game she comes and faces him telling him that he is afraid to be the real him and she can’t wait for him because waiting for him was like waiting for rain in this town (there has been a huge ongoing drought). Sam thinks she can make it through the football game without falling apart, but with one touchdown to win, she turns to leave. Austin sees her get up and by now it’s pouring down rain, so what does he do? Austin doesn’t score the winning touchdown, he gives the football to a friend and races to Sam. In front of his dad, and entire school he finally gets his epic kiss, somewhere in there he makes a cheesy reference about rain coming and gets the girl.

  26. Weather has a great importance in different kinds of literary works. Weather can be used to show the mood of the current situation and transfer that mood to the reader. A great example of this is found in “Child’s Play” which is a film written by Don Mancini in 1988. In the beginning of this film, the writers wanted us to feel as if something bad was going to happen. To give us this feeling, there were flashes of lightning that came through the windows and lit up that room. The lighting was also accompanied by the sound of heavy rain as the cops were bursting through the door to arrest the serial killer (Charles Lee Ray).

Weather can symbolize many things in books, movies, or in any kind of literature. It can symbolize mood, foreshadowing, and many other things. The Lion King for example. Before Scar killed Mufasa the plains were pretty, full of food, and it was just flourishing. The weather was sunny, and good. Then after Scar kills Mufasa, the weather changes. It's storming, dark, there's no food, and the hyena's take over. The weather tells that the mood is dark, scary, creepy, and hopeless. The lionesses can´t find food anywhere and they are desperate. Then when Simba returns to fight Scar, there is a huge storm with lightning, that causes fire everywhere. Simba and Scar fight while Scar tells Simba what really happens to his dad, which makes Simba even more mad. They fight and once the fight is over and Simba returns to the other lions, the weather changes. It gets sunny again and the plains start to flourish with plants and animals again. That shows that everything will be okay and that Simba was the right king for the throne. But also right at the end, the monkey brings out Simba´s little baby boy to be welcomed into the family and kingdom. So in all weather deepens the mood and for me when the monkey came out with a baby, it just warmed my heart because all the animals were there and it was a beautiful day. They had won.

  28. In literature, weather is not just weather. Weather is added to a story to add drama and set the tone and mood. It can also reflect the character's mood and foreshadow events. I have seen the power of weather through the television series Jane the Virgin.

In the story, Jane is caught in a love triangle between her former fiance, Michael, and her child’s father, Rafael. Jane is left to chose which man she would prefer being with. Amongst all the drama, Jane remembers her and Michael’s first kiss. Their first kiss was after a Christmas party. As they started to kiss, the weather changed and it started to snow.

Snow is deemed as being warm and playful, Therefore, I believe that the snow was more than just snow. The snow reflected their moment together as they poured out their feelings of love.

A kiss is just a kiss, however, the snow added drama and romance to the scene. With this romance, the author foreshadowed that they will be together for a while. The scene, showed them in each other's embrace, warm, just like the idea of snow.

    1. That is actually a really great example. Most people might've thought that the snow was just there, but it makes sense that it added a different mood.

  29. In Shawshank Redemption,Andy is falsely accused of killing his wife, but he feels responsible for his wife's death so he goes to prison without a fight. At the end of the movie, Andy has just escaped prison through a sewage tunnel when he is caught in a heavy downpour. So not only does the rain clean his outside but it is also a symbol of his redemption. He lets the past wash away with the rain and no longer feels guilty about his wife’s murder. The rain also symbolizes his freedom since he is allowed to experience the rain instead of being in prison.

  30. In the book, The Lightning Thief, part one of the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, Percy is on his way to camp from the beach and it is storming. The storm represents the state of rush that all the passengers in the car feel. It is also there for the plot a bit, but the true importance is in the fact that the storm is showing the temperaments of those in the car: anxiety building to anger, confusion, and a general sense of rushing. The storm also helps to make the monster that’s chasing them even scarier, as the lightning flashes around him and only partially illuminates him.

  31. The Lion King is a good example of the way weather is more than just being an event that occurs.

In the beginning, when Mufasa is in power, you can clearly see all the plants and animals thriving and living healthy, but when Scar kills Mufasa and takes over Pride Rock, the plants die and the animals (except the hyenas) have no food to eat, so the ecosystem overall fails. This symbolizes the utter chaos Scar brings to Mufasa's kingdom. Later, Simba comes back to Pride Rock and he defeats Scar. After, the weather begins to improve once more and the plants and animals thrive again. The weather was a symbol of the good and bad characters when they took power.

  32. Weather has a great importance in literature. Weather is much more than just an event. It can help the reader understand the importance and seriousness of things that are happening. It can also help the foreshadow something that may happen and show feelings. For example, when I think of thunderstorms I think that something bad is going to happen soon like in the Lion King when there was a thunderstorm Scar and Simba started fighting. When I think of rain I think of loneliness or sadness. The sunshine reflects a happy and regenerated mood to the reader.

Weather is a very powerful element in literature. Weather can symbolize many things, like dark clouds representing a gloomy time or thunder symbolizing a violent event. The movie "The Watchmen" starts out with a member of a team of heroes, The Comedian, is killed by a perpetrator in his home. One of his team members, Nightowl, attends his funeral on a gloomy, rainy day. Towards the end of the movie, another one of the members of the team, Rorschach, is walking through a desolate snowy plain when he is approached by another member, Dr. Manhattan. Rorschach has a dark secret that he must expose, but Dr. Manhattan won't let him. In this tense moment, the snow comes to a complete halt, right before Dr. Manhattan ends Rorschach's life.

  34. Weather can set moods, foreshadow, and create important scenes in literary works. An example of weather being of importance in a literary work is in Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. Snow can be seen as innocent and cleansing, but it is mostly represents death. In the story, Charlie, the main character, had an aunt who went out to get him a present for his birthday in the snow and ended up dying in a car accident. The reasons I stated the ways snow can be symbolic is because in Perks of Being a Wallflower the snow means it all. The aunt that died was not innocent, she would touch Charlie when he was younger, and in a way her death was cleansing him of her. Though the thought of her death still haunted Charlie, he was an innocent child when she had touched him and when she had died. From different aspects the snow shows innocence, being lost or being cleansed, and death. The snow set the tone for the whole scenes where it was Charlie talking about the night his aunt died.

  35. Weather is a very important tool in literary work in more ways than one. A example of this is say a character may have died but it is not yet confirmed, the screen pans to a rainy day which in most cases concludes that a character did in fact die or if they did not die it will probably show a clear sky. Or if there is a evil home of a bloodthirsty villain the surrounding area around the house will probably be cloudy with lightning to show that the area should be feared. My point is that weather is often used to portray a certain mood by quite literally darkening or bringing light to a scene.

Weather has a great symbolic meaning in literature. Authors use different forms of weather to represent the mood or seriousness of a situation. I chose to use the first episode of the popular television series, “Pokemon” because it displays two different types of weather. As Ash goes on his journey with the reluctant Pikachu, they get in a fight with a whole flock of Spearows. They dive into a waterfall in order to escape them, but Pikachu gets injured. Ash borrows Misty’s bike to take Pikachu to the pokemon center in Viridian City. When the Spearow flock find Pikachu and Ash, the weather immediately turns stormy, signifying that something bad is about to happen. This scene is a huge turning point for Pikachu because it performs a powerful thunder shock which drives the Spearows away. The rain clouds part to reveal a rainbow. The rainbow represented a new-found peace between Ash and Pikachu.

Weather will always be important to a story. Weather can do a few different things in novels. They can sometimes be a reflection to the character's feelings for example when a character is sad and the weather around them is cloudy and rainy or when they're happy it's sunny. Another example is in movies or cartoons when evil is present there is always lighting around them. Sometimes weather can foreshadow a future event in the plot. An example is when a character is about to die there is always rain and dark clouds around them. A specific example is in the Scooby-doo cartoons. When the group is about to go to an evil person's castle there are always dark clouds and lighting surrounding it.

  38. In the movie “Aristocats” we follow the story of a mother and her three kittens as they try to find their way home. At the beginning of the story their butler, Edgar, drugged them so that he could leave them far away from their home under a bridge. His reason was that the cats’ unmarried owner was planning on leaving her fortune to them and he thought that if they were out of the picture he would be the one to receive the money. When they were being transported to the place of abandonment and after they woke up, it was heavily raining on them. This signified the severity of the situation and the hardships that they were sure to face on their journey to get home.

  39. Weather can be important because it determines the mood of the story it can also determine the Ethos of something. Weather can determine many important things It can describe the meaning of some or give it meaning.
For example if a poet's poem says something like “the gloom of days was as the dark as the sky and its rain” then we would automatically assume by the words gloom dark and rain that he is depressed because if we change the weather to “the gloom of the days was as dark and the sun and it's rays” Then that would mean he's about as sad and the sun is dark giving off and implying that he is happy. - Stephanie Martinez

With weather, it can mean many different things. It can foreshadow events, change the mood of the story or even set the whole story into motion.
Zeus is the Greek God of the sky and the ruler of all Olympians and he was known for using lightning bolts as a weapon. In Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (movie version), Zeus’ Lightning Bolt had been stolen. In order to give Percy a warning, He makes storms and thunder. This shows his emotions and makes the young demigod heros even more conscious of their time limit.

  41. The weather has affected your life in so many ways. Not only does it affect what you wear or how you go about your day, but also in the books you read and the movies you watch. Weather conditions on a piece of literature affect the mood and can also help the reader/viewer foreshadow upcoming events.

As for my example, I will be using a movie called Unbroken. Unbroken is about a WWII soldier who faces many challenges while trying to fight for his country. Louie enlisted in the military and is given the mission to fly to a certain place but his plane crashes. After the crash, Louie and some buddies are on a raft for 47 days. During the first few days, the weather was partly cloudy and as the days went on more and more clouds appeared. The boys had done away with their food and their buddies started to die off. After each person died there would be a thunderstorm. At day 47 when Louie and his friend arrived where their people, the weather returned to normal.

I believe that weather is an essential part of literature because this allows for the reader to feel more sympathy for the characters.

Weather is a very important detail inserted into movies or story because in different types of literature the use of weather is sometimes used as an act to foreshadowing something or to symbolize something.

In a film, “90 Minutes in Heaven” the main character Don Piper is driving in a stormy weather which is foreshadowing that something unpleasant or bad is about to occur. Don Piper suffers a horrible car accident when a truck hit him kill him for 90 minutes. The accident was foreshadowed by the storm the grey clouds and rain showed a sad event about to occur and the lightning in a way symbolized the giant truck hits the Don Piper's car.

More specifically later in the film it is relieved that when the truck hit Don he died for 90 minutes and the during those 90 minutes Mr. Piper when to heaven. If the lightning is symbolized by the giant truck and Don Piper’s car symbolize the ground. Lightning is thought to be an of heaven, God or gods. So, when the impact occurs a heavenly act has occurred, which is the fact that Don Piper ascends to heaven.

    The Coldest Winter Ever

In the beginning of the story Winter, the main character talks about how she received her name because she born during one of New York's worst storms. Throughout the book the weather talked about and it shows that during each season her character was doing something parallel to it. Her name is a metaphor for how cold her character becomes in the book.
