Chapter 14 -- Yes, She’s a Christ Figure, Too

Apply the criteria on page 119 to a major character in a significant literary work.

Try to choose a character that will have many matches.

This is a particularly apt tool for analyzing film -- for example, Star Wars, Cool Hand Luke, Excalibur, Malcolm X, Braveheart, Spartacus, Gladiator and Ben-Hur.

One character I will choose is Goku from Dragon Ball Z. First, Goku is seen wounded many times in the anime. He's seen in agony plenty of times. Goku has sacrificed himself quite a few times in order to defeat enemies stronger than him. I'm not sure if he counts as "good with children;" he trains his kids to be strong, but is rather sympathetic and pushes them very hard. In some episodes in the early and middle seasons of the show, he's been seen as an excellent fisher. Nobody really knows his exact age. He's never been employed. He can fly and run very fast, so I think that counts has humble. He has walked on water before. Whenever he's knocked down or defeated, he's often seen with his arms spread out. He has talked to the devil before, and has beaten him if I remember correctly. One of his friends used to be a thief but changed. He's very simple minded, so he tries to keep things simple, and also tell stories about mistakes and how to avoid them. He's never been buried, but he has died before. He has a large group of friends; some of them aren't into fighting as much as he is, and others aren't as strong. Goku shows mercy to many people, including enemies that have killed people he loved. Finally, Goku originally came to earth to kill the inhabitants, but suddenly changed his mind and decided to protect it.

    1. Since I watched Dragon Ball Z then I think Goku would be considered a savior due to his hero like features and if we was killed off in the beginning of the series, everyone would of died because they needed him to save them all.

    2. Goku makes a great Christ figure; not to mention a lot of depictions of angels have long, blond hair and robes, so he also fits the physical depiction.

The character that I am familiar with and that best fits the matches is from the film Robocop. In Robocop, Alex Murphy is murdered in the streets of Detroit and is later revived. He is revived as a superhuman law enforcer, Robocop. Because Detroit is filled with crimes, criminals, etc.. they desperately need a savior Alex is shot in the hand, body, and head, that signifies Christ’s crucifixion. Alex comes back in a new form - Robocop- and his mission is protect and guide the people of Detroit, who look at him as their savior. In the end, Robocop is seen walking on water, just as Christ is believed to have done. I believe that this character fits some of the criteria, as much as it can.

  3. I believe that Dean, a father of four, is a pretty accurate match to these criteria. He was not crucified, but he was a single father who was in agony over not being able to afford his children. He is hired to work in construction, on a yacht for Joanna and yachts are on water, plus he swims out in the water a couple times, so he is good with water. Being that Dean has four children, it's safe to assume that he is at least thirty-three. His mode of transportation was typically a beat up car, so you could say it was somewhat humble, and he wasn't believed to walk on water, but he swam in water, if that counts. Deans arms are only outstretched to Annie and his children, but that is still outstretched. He did spend time in the wilderness... of his backyard. Dean never had a confrontation with the devil himslef, but he did drink a lot of alcohol and he lied to Joanna, so you could say he did some sinning. Dean's friends aren't theives, per say, but they aren't the most proper people. He was not the creator of aphorisms or parable, nor was he buried at all.

  4. Aki from the movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits within (2001), I am not joking it is a real movie. Aki the main character, she is cornered by Phantoms the enemies in the story which represent demons trying to devour the souls of the living, she is rescued by a man named gray and his team represent the holy angels saving the souls from the evil of the Demons. Later on they find the sixth signature which is part of eight signatures that can kill the phantoms which represent the holy Bible, so therefore it is not only a great movie but also a great reference as well.

“Braveheart” is a film adapted from real historical events with the main character, William Wallace, being based off of a real man. This film explains the struggle for freedom and the courage that the Scottish of the 13th century had in order to sacrifice their lives for what they believed in.

One could say that William Wallace exhibits the character traits of a christ-like figure. During a war for Scottish freedom from England, William Wallace proves to be the definition of brave. Wallace is everything one would expect a christ-like figure to be. He is courageous, helpful, kind, and strong. He dedicates his life to helping win Scottish freedom. He is good with children and he helps the broken, the ones enslaved. He fights for a cause he believes in, and most of all, he sacrifices himself for it. Christ-like figures do not completely embody Christ himself, but are a symbolic representation of a savior and in Braveheart, Wallace is just that, a savior.

  7. The Matrix is a movie that pretty much represents the modern-day savior of a digital world. The character that best matches this criteria would be Neo from The Matrix who is in his thirties, not married, wounded in both eyes later in the series after saving others, denied one of the agents that represents the devil in The Matrix that promised him many things and people believed in him after his death thus he was resurrected in real life also coming back to life in The Matrix.

He is the main character in the series and represents the modern-day man who is a figure of Christ. Neo is essentially the valve or main component to saving the human race from slavery since they are all in a factory being forced into a digital reality called The Matrix to power robotic creatures that are called Sentinels. At the end he is blind after saving the human race but can still see through The Matrix.

In the movie "Olympus Has Fallen," Mike Banning, who after a tragic accident involving the first lady, is moved from the White House to a desk job a few blocks down. While at his job, Banning notices that there is a terrorist attack taking place and the White House and everyone there is in danger.

I feel as if many would say he is a Christ-like figure. He came back to save people he didn't even work with anymore. Another reason is because of the President's son, who was very close with Banning. He remembered where Connor's hiding place was and found him and saved him.

He did this all alone. He went in there with no back-up and saved everyone. While he was in there, he got bloody and got hurt, and this is another thing that makes him Christ-like. He didn't know the outcome going in, but he knew coming out that he was their savior.

  9. In the movie Highlander, Conner MacLeod has lived for just shy of 470 years old which implies that he has racked up quite a few miles traveling humbly and has more than likely caught a few fish and has probably made an aphorism or two. Early on in the movie, he suffers a lethal sword wound through the chest but miraculously recovers a few days later, the equivalent of him being raised from the dead. Unfortunately, his recovery leads to his being exiled from his village with his arms bound around the yoke of a cart. Due to this he is forced to wander through the wilderness of Scotland for quite some time, most likely in agony from the beating he took prior to his exile .
He confronts the devil in the form of the Kurgan, who, as Ramirez puts it, would make mankind suffer an eternity of darkness. Redeeming an unworthy world isn’t exactly MacLeod’s intentions, but in order to survive, he has to save the world from a monster of it’s own making. He is most certainly self-sacrificing as shown when he goes to rescue another character from the Kurgan. In the movie it also shows that he is good with kids by way of the scene where he first meets Rachael.

  10. Corrie ten Boom from "The Hiding Place" seems like a perfect fit for a Christ figure. To begin, she suffered during the holocaust after helping and teaching Jews. These Jews looked up to her like disciples. She was fantastic at caring for all of them despite their age. She just so happened to enter the concentration camp near the nineteen forties, so she would be no more than a decade over thirty upon arrival. Her profession was a watch craftswomen which is very similar to a carpenter in job skills. She absolutely adored walking the streets of Harlem. She symbolically had her arms outstretched to welcome illegal Jews into her home. Temptation of exposing the Jews in her home to save her family was possible, but she let the Jews stay safe and was taken away instead. She resurrected and returned to the regular world after being released from the concentration camp. Finally, she forgave and redeemed the Germans by returning to Germany in order to establish rehabilitation camps for other concentration camp survivors. Corrie fits about two thirds of the points on Foster's list, so I would say that she expertly resembles his idea of a Christ figure.

In the movie "Men on Fire" by Tony Scott, Denzel Washington played as John Creasy as a former CIA agent, and became an alcoholic and did not care to change his own ways, until he fell in love with a nine-year-old girl named Lupita, played as Dakota Fanning. He was hired by her father to protect her from Human trafficking for ransom in Mexico.

During the movie Lupita was abducted and Creasy became anguished after the abduction and was wiling to do anything to get her back. In the end he had to give his own life in exchange for hers.

This is related to the the list because Jesus and Creasy had the same passion for the love of another. They were both willing to give their own life for an other. They both became selfless and neither one no longer thinking of themselves but thinking of another.

In the popular television series Supernatural, Sam Winchester, played by Jared Padalecki can be seen as a Christ figure. It may seem odd to thin at first, considering he was the vessel for Lucifer, but in being this vessel he sacrificed a lot. In this show Sam was the vessel for Lucifer, and his brother Dean was the vessel for Michael. IF either one of the vessels declined then Michael would have killed millions of innocent people. There is one big part of being a vessel. You are not in control of your body.

During the fight between Michael and Lucifer Sam was able to take control of his body for a brief moment that allowed him to put Lucifer, Michael, and himself in a cage deep inside hell. This showed great sacrifice, giving Sam one quality of Christ. Another we see is his kind, compassionate, caring, and he is very forgiving, even when someone doesn't deserve it.

Sam has forgave his brother, father, and friends many times, even when they didn't deserve it. When Sam sacrificed himself into the pit (hell) Dean didn't come to look for him, or try and find a way to get him out. When Sam finally got out he was furious, but still forgave him. Who could forgive someone from letting them stay in hell? Sam did. Christ always forgives, even if we don't deserve it, and so did Sam.

A major character I am familiar with that has many matches to these Christ symbols is Bonnie Bennett from “The Vampire Diaries.” Bonnie is a good witch, always looking out what is best for her friends and other people, regardless if she puts her own life at risk. Throughout hard and difficult spells, Bonnie has been in agonizing pain with her arms outstretched while she performs the ritual, many of them ending in internal bleeding. As a witch she has spent time out in the wilderness, exploring the elements and starting the occasional forest fire in the beginning of her witch training. This character often travels by foot to get from place to place since the town she lives in is small and it’s not a far walk to get from place to place. Bonnie is a very forgiving person. This is shown when she still offers care to the vampires in town that often attempt to kill or drink her blood. Bonnie is believed to have had a confrontation with the devil on several occasions due to the many times that she has sacrificed herself during rituals in order to bring someone else back from the dead. Although, Bonnie was once trapped in hell as she awaited her friends to return her and friend Damon Salvatore back to Earth. When given the opportunity to go back, only one of the two were able to have the option, and Bonnie made Damon go in order for him to be able to see his girlfriend, Bonnie’s best friend, Elena.

Oliver Queen from the TV series “Arrow” is a christ-like figure. Oliver shows many items equivalent to a christ-like figure such as many wounds on his body, he shows signs of agony, he sacrifices himself many times, he is known for spending many years in the wilderness alone, and lastly Oliver arose from the dead.

In the beginning of “Arrow” Oliver is returning to Starling City, a shock to everyone who lives in Starling because they thought Oliver was dead after going out in a boat with his father, later wrecking due to a massive storm. Oliver returning to Starling resembles Oliver rising from the dead, although, Oliver never really died his family still had a funeral and a tombstone for him as if he had died.

Before Oliver was able to return to Starling he was on an island named Lian Yu, Lian Yu is the wilderness Oliver spent many years in. Olive got to Lian Yu by a life raft, him, his father, and one other man did make it off the boat but his dad killed the other man and himself to make sure Oliver would have enough water to survive. Oliver was not alone on Lian Yu for the whole time, there were a few points where other people captured Oliver and tortured him which is one reason he has many scars. After leaving the island Oliver was captured by someone else and was tortured again also resulting in many scars.

Oliver showed signs of agony when he was tortured and the few times he let the people of Starling down. One example of when Oliver let the people of Starling down is when he became a vigilante for the second or third time. He let the people of Starling down because they didn’t need a good vigilante they needed someone they could confide in and someone who could protect them, therefore, Olive became mayor when no one else could due to violence.

Oliver sacrifices himself in many ways, one example I have already mentioned is Oliver becoming mayor, another example is when he fought Ra’s Al Ghul to save his sister because she was in trouble due to Malcolm Merlyn, my last example is the countless times Oliver saved the people of Starling and took villains to jail.

When first reading or seeing a piece of literature, you don't typically see any of the characters as being a "Christ" figure, unless you read the actual Bible. A Christ figure doesn't necessarily have to turn water into wine or walk on water but there are other elements that make a character a Christ figure. As an example, I will use the main protagonist of my favorite book and movie series, Harry Potter. Harry is a great example of a Christ figure because:
    a) He has a wound on his forehead: A scar in the shape of a lightning bolt that he got as a baby from Voldemort.
    b) He is in agony a lot because of his scar hurting when there is a connection with Voldemort and many other times when he is tortured.
    c) He is very self sacrificial when he has to give up almost everything to defeat Voldemort. He had to give up his normal life of being a normal boy when he received his Hogwarts letter. He also lost many friends in the process to take down Voldemort.
    d) He was very kind and good with everyone. He never really got into quarrels unless he was provoked to.
    e) He always had to take humble modes of transportation in order to stay out of Voldemort and his death eaters' radar.
    f) In Harry Potter, Voldemort can be seen as the devil because he has his own followers and he is never up to anything good. Harry has multiple encounters with Voldemort himself or his death eaters. He was also tempted to do as Voldemort when he was tired of what was happening to him.
    g) He had "disciples" in a way. His friends and family were there for him and advised him in defeating Voldemort, although not all of them were equally devoted.
    h) He forgave all his friends and family for their wrongdoings.
    i) His main goal was to redeem the wizarding world, even if they weren't very worthy. A lot of wizards had gone to Voldemort's side and even some of the "good" wizards did some bad things, tinting the name of wizards.

One literary work that reminds me of a Christ figure would be the 'The Lion King'. I believe that this movie has a lot of thing from the list included in it. In the movie Mufasa is killed by his brother, which kind of goes with the first thing on the list. After his father is killed Simba blames himself and gets banished. Simba is a lion so I would imagine that he is good at hunting and he made friends with Timon and Pumba, which goes with number five and kind of number four. Simba is an animal so the only transportation he has is walking and he lives in the wilderness. He has had confrontation with Scar who could be considered as the devil. In the end he becomes the king and Scar is killed. That was all the reasons why I believe the movie 'The Lion King' is an example of a Christ figure.

  18. Star Wars, created by George Lucas, is one of the world's most well-known series of movies. Next to Darth Vader, Yoda is one of the most famous characters in the movies. Yoda is an eight hundred year old Jedi Master who has trained many generations of Jedi. He has the qualities of being a christlike figure because he was in agony at his time of death, he’s good with children because he was a Jedi Initiate trainer, he spent time alone on the swampy planet Dagobah, also had some confrontation with the dark side, but he never seemed tempted to leave the light side. I would call Yoda self sacrificing because of his want to train and help Jedi younglings become well trained Jedi. Jedi could be considered disciples who banded together for a common good. Like in the Bible, some disciples were not very devoted, and this is shown Star Wars because of one Jedi in particular, Anakin Skywalker, who found the force with the dark side and later became the well-known Darth Vader. It is safe to say that Yoda is a very forgiving person. He and the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi reappeared and forgave Anakin for what he had done. I believe that all of the reasons I listed above and the list from Foster’s chapter is enough evidence to say that Yoda is a christlike figure.

  19. A major character in a film that I see as portraying some of the characteristics of Christ is Mary Poppins. She follows more than one of the listed characteristics including: self-sacrificing, good with children, known to use humble modes of transportation, very forgiving, and came to redeem an unworthy world.

Some of these are less extravagant that what Christ did; however, she did do them. The rode a bike instead of a plane or car, then went to the homes of the rowdy and less fortunate to give them a chance at a new life. She was forgiving, the sacrificed everything for the children in her care, and she was amazing with children.

  20. Christ figures can be found in any form of literature. The figures are given Christ characteristics. Harry Potter has some of the characteristics:
    1. Harry is scarred on his forehead from Voldemort and on the back of his hand from Umbridge.
    2. His scar is a connection between him and Voldemort. He lives in agony because of the connection between the two.
    3. He is good with people
    8. He has used different transportation throughout the series.
    11. Although he wasn't completely alone, Ron, Hermonie and Harry in the Deathly Hallows, the three were alone in the wilderness.
    12. Voldemort shows many characteristics of the devil. Harry has had many confrontations with Voldemort.

  21. In C.S. Lewis’s book “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” the lion, Aslan can be viewed as a Christ figure. Aslan is great with Peter, Susan, Edmund, and especially Lucy when they come into Narnia. He typically walks everywhere because he is a lion. Aslan sacrifices himself to the White Witch in order to save Edmund. He is killed by the white Witch on the Stone Table, but comes back to help save Narnia. Aslan is also very warm and welcoming to most people and creatures of Narnia. He does spend most of his time alone, traveling, but does come back when his help and guidance is needed. Alsan is seen as the protector and saviour of Narnia.

In the movie “The Green Mile” John Coffey was used as a Christ like figure. Both of them were in agony, self sacrificing, last seen with thieves and both were accused of a crime that they didnt commit and was put to death from it.
John had a special gift of being able to see the things that people have done and was able to heal people of their sicknesses, just Christ did. He was later accused of killing two little girls he found in the woods. He was then thrown in jail and was put on death row. People thought that he killed the two girls because people found him overtop of the girls bodies, he was trying to heal them. The people that found him though had a different opinion, they thought that he did it. That's why he was thrown in jail and put on death row.

  23. *TEEN WOLF SPOILERS*

Whenever I think of a christ-like figure from a literary work, I think of Scott McCall from the television series “Teen Wolf”. In season 1, Scott is wounded by the bite of a werewolf. He is then in agony due to the amount of pain that he is experiencing from the bite. He then shows that he is self-sacrificing because instead of going out he tied himself with handcuffs in his room so that he doesn’t cause harm during his transformation. Later on in the series the love of his life, Allison, passes away. When this happened he wasn’t physically buried, he was emotionally buried. However, even though he felt dead inside, he still rose and continued to do what he had to do for the sake of others.

Percy Jackson from the book series"Percy Jackson" match some of the characteristic of Christ. First of all, Percy have many time for his friends and example of this would be in the Battle of Labyrinth, where Percy told Annabeth to go and he face the telkhines alone. Another character trait that resemble Christ would be that Percy is good with kids and an example of this would be with Nico and Percy in Titan's curse. Percy also can walk on water because he have power over water and can use it to his wish. Percy also have confronted the devil or kronos in the book and have spend a lot of time in the wilderness.

  25. Religion affects many aspects of our culture, even literature. Authors have been known to use christ like figures, or people who parallel Jesus, in their stories. I have seen this with Gandalf in Lord of the rings. Gandalf is a wizard, leader of the Fellowship of the Ring, and the main protagonist in Lord of the rings. He possess many similarities to Christ as he is self-sacrificing and gracious person.

In a battle with a Balrog, Gandalf sacrifices himself to the beast so the others can get away safely. After his self-sacrifice, we see a very important parallel, resurrection. During the fight, Gandalf dies and is resurrected as a white and illuminate figure. This is very similar to the resurrection of Christ after he sacrificed himself for the forgiveness of sins.

He was also a very humble person. He would travel either by foot or horse and cart. He would even spend time alone in the wilderness. There have also been instances where he was tempted by the devil through the ring. Gandalf even had disciples. For he was the leader for the dwarves, just like Jesus and his twelve disciples.

Overall, Gandalf possess many attributes of Christ. He is not the exact same but his character follows the idea of being a self-sacrificing savior.

Superman. Superman is one of my favorite movies and I didn't think about his until I was looking through my movies the other night. Superman is like a christ like figure. Just like Jesus he could walk on water but a big similarity is that Superman was sent to Earth by his father so that he could live and lead a new world. Jesus was also sent to Earth to help. Jesus and Superman both have great abilities so that they could help people. Going by the list on page 119 this is how much Superman and Jesus are alike.

    Jesus:
    2) In agony
    3) Self sacrificing
    4) Good with kids
    9) Believed to have walked on water
    13) Last seen in the company of thieves
    15) Buried but rose on 3rd day
    17) Very forgivable
    18) redeemed an unworthy world
    7) worked as a carpenter

    Superman:
    2) In agony when stabbed with Kryptonite
    3) He sacrificed himself to save many others
    4) Superman saved kids and had a particular liking to one of them
    9) Walked on water
13)Last seen dealing with thieves because he rescues people from them, like robberies 15) Superman awakes from a coma after 3 days 17) He forgave his parents for sending him to Earth 18) Saved Earth from bad people and monsters 7) Worked as a reporter

  27. In Horns by Joe Hill, the Christ figure is actually the devilish main character Ig Perrish. Throughout the movie there are references to the devil; such as in matches or in the most obvious factor the horns. The horns compel people to do what they want to do but know it is wrong. There are a lot of crimes that people have said that God had compelled them to commit, like the horns. Considering the criteria on page 119, Ig Perrish is in agony, is tempted by the devil in the sense that he begins to find pleasure in his evil, and later in the novel gains wings (which burn up and turn him into a truly demonic character).

  28. Crucified: Tris got killed when David shot her, however, I cannot find where the wound is.
In agony, I believe she is torn at the end of her life, she could have lived and she wanted to. She had Tobias waiting for her so, she had to be in agony choosing to leave the love of her life behind.
Self-sacrificing. Yes, she died to let her brother live. She chose, yet, she let her undeserving brother live instead of her. She died a hero, sacrificing herself to activate the memory serum.
Good with children: Yes, a kid gets shot and Tris assures her it is okay showing her her own wound and telling the child everyone is asleep to calm her. Next, she tells the girl to go upstairs and wait until her mommy comes and gets her. Tris does this to protect and calm the child.
Good with fish, loaves, wine, water. Not that I can recall.
33 when last seen. No, she was 16 in series.
    Carpenter. No
Humble transportation. Tris walked a lot.
    Walked on water. No
    Arms outstretched. I don’t know.
    Tempted. Yes
Last seen in company of thieves. Tris was last seen in company of her killer and bad brother, so kinda thieves of her life, yes.
    Creator of parables. No
Buried, arose on third day. No, Tobias spread ashes, she is dead for good (tears, not!).

  29. A character from literature I feel could be associated as a Christ figure is Atticus Finch from "To Kill a Mockingbird." Why? Because Atticus Finch meets most of the criteria for the description. His whole town looked down on his morals, and that's considered his crucifixion. He was a kind man to all children. And in the novel, Atticus Finch even confronted his very own devil, Bob Ewell. He sacrifices himself for Tom Robinson because he knows that he is an innocent man. He shows all of these great qualities of a christ-like figure.

  30. A character from literature I feel could be a Christ figure would be Dean Winchester from Supernatural. He has a scar from where he had sacrificed himself and in an older episode he and his brother Sam had saved children from these monsters. He is always keeping his brother Sam from not getting hurt well he tries to anyway.

  31. Considering the fact that I have already used Aslan from Narnia in a previous post, I will use another lion for this one.

Mufasa from The Lion King is a Christ-like figure in many ways.

    1) He had wounds on his hands/feet/paws from Scar, and on his side and head from the stampede.
    2) He was in physical agony as he was climbing out of the stampede and mental agony when he realized that Scar was betraying him.
    3) He sacrificed himself to let Simba live.
    4) He was really good while teaching and playing with his son.
    8) He walked around everywhere he went
    12) Scar could be seen as a devil figure, hiding his true nature, then striking while unexpected.
    17) He forgave Simba for going to the elephant graveyard.

  32. The Doctor in Doctor Who is an example of a christlike figure. When he regenerates, light emits from his hands and head. He is usually in agony when he regenerates, especially the 10th doctor. He is self sacrificing, for both his companions and other planets, but he is usually shown sacrificing himself for Earth. He travels in a phone box which was a common and humble object in 1969 when the show first started. He is often tempted by his enemies to join forces, but he always declines. His disciples could be seen in the his companions because he has different degrees of relationships with all of them.

  33. There is a netflix original called “The 7 Deadly Sins” which is about a kingdom’s most powerful band of knights until the king was murdered. After the murder the kingdom believes that The Sins killed the king so the split ways and go into hiding. My favorite character and main character is Meliodas which has many of the qualities found on page 119. Meliodas is always willing to sacrifice himself if harm is coming towards others, sometimes causing intense agony for him. While it was not 30 years from age last seen, it was several years from last time seen.

  34. The Christ figure that I chose to use is Mufasa from “The Lion King.” In this movie Mufasa is the king of the Pridelands and has his own pride of followers. This pride could be considered his disciples, though the number of members is not specified. He is also very good with children and has a reputation for showing kindness to those who deserve it. He could also be forgiving, as shown by the way he handled Simba when he ran off and took Nala to the elephant graveyard. He was a very humble person and had a deep appreciation for nature and the creatures inhabiting it.

  36. In my own opinion I think the Terminator T-800 was some what jesus like. He was self sacrificing when he decided to kill himself so that they could not get the chip inside his head. He was also very good with children when he saved John Connor from the T-1000 liquid terminator. He also was very kind to him and played games with him. He has also lost his right arm when he was saving John Connor.

    Terminator:
1.) saved the world when he decided to kill himself so that they don't get the chip.
    2.) Saved John Connor
3.) Also played with John Connor

Reading this list, I thought of the Greek God Hades in the way he is portrayed in the Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan. Hades is the god of the underworld. He is in agony (in his mind), He is portrayed as the devil in a way. He can’t go to Olympus, only Earth and the Underworld, therefore he is buried and in the Greek world, He has many followers. Let’s be real, he is Satan, but he is also a God in Greek mythology. He can take a human form and we don’t know what he has done while being in that form. However, the book made me think of him.

  40. In the movie Seven Pounds the main protagonist Ben Thomas is devoted to helping others that have an illness. Just like Christ helped heal those that needed to be freed from the pain of the illness they were suffering.

Ben sacrifices himself to help others overcome their illness. As an example, he donates bone marrow to a boy, donated his kidneys to an old lady, helps people get away from abuse by letting them live in his home. Once he dies he donated his heart to someone who has been suffering from a heart condition and his eyes to blind man.
He contemplates his life and of those around him a lot while outdoors.
