The essentials of a vampire story or any other monster story, is that there has to be a monster in it fueled by hatred or greed. In the book the example of Dracula is the vampire Dracula who is fueled by the thirst of more blood in his pursuit which is fueled by the greed inside of him. In the Naruto manga series the character Gaara has lived out his life being despised of by his village and had to kill people who had wanted to hurt him over time it made him into a killing machine and his rage is fueled by his hatred for everybody except for himself, but because of the terrors he went through as a child made him into the evil he was in the story, his backstory is very emotional and it even makes the audience feel somewhat bad for him, usually monsters are made from other monsters and this is true even for Gaara. Posted by: James Lynn A vampire story is primarily about exploitation or taking advantage of others. There is one figure, the vampire, attempting to take advantage of another figure, who is usually innocent. The vampire is usually older or sees that they are more important than the other figure. One example of a vampire case in a story is in the video game "Overlord," which is one of my favorite video games of all time. In the beginning of the story, there are eight righteous heroes on a mission to defeat the evil Overlord. Your character is one of those heroes. As you and the heroes defeat the Overlord, your character sacrifices himself to kill the Overlord. The Overlord, however, pulls a sneaky body switch with you, resulting in you becoming the Overlord and placed into a deep slumber. The seven heroes and the Wizard, who is the one who switched bodies with you, begin to rejoice. The Wizard begins to slowly corrupt each of the seven heroes, each of them falling to one of the seven deadly sins. You, as the Overlord, awakes from your slumber and begins to rebuild the Overlord's dark domain, The Tower. You use your powers to defeat the seven "heroes," and you discover that the Wizard is using you to rebuild the tower, and later plans to destroy you as well. Ultimately, he fails, and you continue your rain of terror upon the lands.
A vampire story is typically about seduction. Vampires have a distinct mystery and charm to their persona, which attracts humans who find them enticing. And as author elaborates within the book: evil obviously has its links to sex, temptation and selfishness. The essentials to a vampire story is a vampire, evil and charming, our vampires victim who generally falls deeply in love with this mysterious creature of the night, and typically a good-hearted vampire trying to warn the victim of the others' evil intentions, or a friend of the victim that is inherently suspicious.
In The Vampire Diaries, a series of novels and now television show, Damon Salvatore is the evil vampire brother of Stefan, who is the kind-hearted vampire who feeds off of bunnies and squirrels. Along comes Elena Gilbert, a pretty girl who both of the brothers take an immediate interest in. In the beginning, Elena falls for the kind-hearted brother Stefan, and Damon is not pleased with this, causing him to go on a scavenge throughout the town and drain as many civilians as he wants until Elena succumbs to his wishes and joins him in vampirism. This example shows the villain, Damon Salvatore, his quest: to make Elena his, the obstacles that block him: his brother stealing the girl, and his evil plan to get what he wants: to kill innocent civilians (which his sweet, bunny-eating brother won't stand for), making Stefan give up the girl and allow Damon to swoop in and charm her into his arms.
I haven't been able to catch up with the series lately but it's one of the best. I agree with how you were able to describe a vampire and the essentials of a vampire story. Damon has that charm and is very attractive, one of my favorites.
Posted by: Hannah Cribby The essentials of a vampire story as stated by the book are "an old figure representing corrupt, outworn values; a young, preferably virginal female; a stripping away of her youth, energy, virtue; a continuance of the life force of the old male; the death or destruction of the young women." (Foster 19). After reading that I started comparing it to 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' and found that it fits in with the essentials of the vampire story. The older figure is the evil queen that transformed herself into an elderly women and gave a poisoned apple to Snow White. The young women is Snow White who gets poisoned by the queen and thanks to Snow White eating the apple the queen would become the fairest of them all. Also in the newest version of 'Snow White' 'Snow White and The Huntsman' the queen gets younger by taking years of life from young females.
In 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' Snow White was put in a never ending sleep, which would be "the death or destruction of the young women." (Foster 19).
This is a very cool connection that you made, Hannah. I can definitely see the relation with vampires since the queen stays young even though she is old.
When the word vampire comes to mind, one visualizes a frightening, disturbing dead man with fangs that lives in deserted homes and frigidly sucks human blood. But literary vampires don’t live by these characteristics. The essentials of a vampire story include a vampire,a manipulative and charming one, a kindly vampire, and a young female who eventually meets the charming vampire.
In Dark and Dangerous Love, Jordan is described as, “The tall, dark and handsome King with no soul, no compassion, no capability to love and appreciate; a man who was obsessively possessive”(Night). He’s attractive over possessive vampire. Aidan is Jordan’s long time best friend who is described as, “A charming Lord, with captivating green eyes, a kind soul, tousled dark hair and a dimpled smile shall tug at your heartstring”(Night). Then there’s Evelyn Blackburn, a beautiful girl who meets Jordan at a town gathering, he’s instantly attracted to her, he must have her. Not trying to reveal too much, but she doesn’t see much in him, seeing she already has a boyfriend. But many obstacles happen and Evelyn ends up having to live with Jordan and Aiden and later falls for Aiden. Anyways, many things happen in between and after this that make this story one of the best I’ve read.
In any vampire story, there are several essential aspects that make the story into what it is. An older, commonly male, figure representing corrupt, outworn values takes the role of the vampire, while a young, typically virginal, female takes the role of the victim. Through the interactions of the vampire and its victim, the girl’s youth, energy, and virtue are taken from her so that the older, corrupted figure may continue living. This draining of the life force of the victim, when sustained over time, eventually leads to their destruction.
Vampirism is exemplified in The Darkest Minds through interactions of the main character and a corrupted American government. Taking the victim’s role is Ruby, a sixteen year-old girl who was uprooted from her life at the age of ten. Picking up six years later, evidence of vampirism is shown in retrospect, after Ruby has suffered destruction from a long period of dehumanization. -J.W.Godwin
Very interesting example since its not a story I would expect and its is still has the characteristics of a vampire story. I like it since it's longterm side effects are present from a government instead of just one person after so many years. A little bit more details would be nice to fully comprehend this story.
Post by: Alanie O’Dell The idea of vampires is used both literally and figuratively throughout many different literary works. However, not all literary works require a character that runs around town sucking the blood out of each naive girl in their path. Vampires are more than the “undead.” The essentials of a Vampire story is a character that is deceitful and selfish. If a character takes advantage over someone and releases their darkest desires, then they are the true workings of a vampire. In a more literal example, a TV show known as “The Vampire Diaries” is a series that entails the story of different types of demonic, supernatural creatures. Damon Salvatore, a 165 year old vampire is the typical villain. He is selfish and has no remorse for taking life after human life for his own needs. Damon’s character challenges and changes many of the other characters found in the series, especially that of his girlfriend Elena Gilbert and her friend Bonnie Bennett. While Damon is selfish and difficult to deal with, Elena and Bonnie are both stronger, more independent women after learning from Damon’s selfish ways. Also in “The Vampire Diaires,” half-wolf, half-vampire hybrid Klaus Mikaelson brings out the darkest desires in newly made vampire Caroline. Klaus longs for her affection and love, but Caroline is repulsed by Klaus’s disregard for his selfish actions. She finds him dangerous, but longs for him in a way that she has never longed for someone before. Klaus’s character is the essence of a vampire. He is selfish, deceitful, but most importantly, he brings out the darkest desires, both sexually and not sexually, in Caroline.
I honestly ship Klaroline very hard. I'm disappointed things never work out with them. Unfortunately, Klaus is the evil and vindictive vampire, whereas Caroline tries to maintain her morals.
I was waiting for Klaus and Caroline to date and was very disappointed when they didn't, but understood because of the personality differences. Klaus was evil and vindictive while Caroline was more pure and sweet. -Piper Colangelo
The essentials of a vampire story include many things. The book we read said that a vampire story is NEVER just about vampires. One essential would be a cold hearted, or selfish person who feels they are more important than others. The second important essentail is a victim. The victim needs to be weaker, not necesarrily just physically, but in other ways such as emotionally. The ictim also needs to be of some value to the "vampire." They should have something the vampire needs, and can't get anywhere else. There is more to a vampire story, but the Vampire and the Victim are the two most important essentials.
In Twighlight, yes I know it's silly, but in Twighlight there are several Vampires, but the "vampires" are Victoria and her crew. They are after humans for their blood. That makes humans the victim. Edward and Bella and all that mess are the heroes. They are trying to save the people, including Bella, from these evil Vampires. Eventually this changes as Bella has a vampire child and becomes a Vampire herself, but in the begining those were the roles of those groups.
I love the Twilight series and Belle, I think, would be considered a victim as well because that is who Victoria is after throughout the movies after they killed her boyfriend. -Kalynne H.
I think that this is a great representation. Twilight is my favorite series and truthfully, I think that the boy that Victoria seduces is the real reason she is a "vampire." She doesn't love him but pretends that she does to get her way and that seems like a "vampire" to me.
I also think it is really interesting how vampires are known for sucking the life out of people, but when edward meets bella, bella really starts living.
Vampires. When most people hear that word, the think of beautiful, yet mysterious blood-sucking creatures. Or the movie "Twilight." However, just because a movie/novel doesn't have blood-sucking creatures in it, doesn't meant it's not a vampire story.
The essentials of a vampire story are to have someone whose needs are above everyone else's, someone who uses others just to get what they want.
"A Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket is a book series involving three orphan children and an evil man named Count Olaf. Count Olaf tries everything he can to get the children because he wants the fortune from their deceased parents. Once the children get away from Count Olaf, he tries everything he can to destroy them. He finds them, tries to kill them several times, and after his attempts fail, he brings in the help of other people.
While Count Olaf wasn't looking to suck the blood of any three children, he showed signs of vampirism by his actions throughout the series.
I agree with you, Count Olaf does have vampire characteristics. He was a very evil man who wanted the kids dead and he would do anything to make that happen.
A good vampire story has many substantial things that can make it stand clear in a hoard of other literature. For starters this is a monster story, so we have to have a bit of the creepiness factor to it; parts like cannibalism and blood lust help to really disturb the reader. Vampires are not normally deprived as ugly; in fact, most renditions characterize them as handsome or beautifully alluring. Most vampires are represented as rather old and frequently attempt to take life out other living creatures. Life does not always mean to physically live though; things like innocence and virginity are up for grabs with crazed old men. A good bit of monster stories try to include weaknesses for the creatures of the night. Tales of vampires avoiding the sun and being killed by having a stake pierce the heart of hand me down methods of their disposal though the centuries.
While he may not be a vampire, I think that Gaston from "Beauty and the Beast" could somewhat amplifies some of the vampires traits.I may be crazy, but for starters he is man who seems older than Belle and wishes to marry her. His main enemy is the Beast; it may not seem like much, but vampires have been frequently depicted killing wild animals and livestock for nourishment. Gaston if heavily depicted as a handsome man like our typical vampire, and to rap it up he frequently shows evil natures and attempts to kill the Beast. He may not be an actual vampire in a sense, but he does have enough of the trait that he could be classified under the character type.
I think that 'Beauty and the Beast' is a good example of a vampire story and I agree that Gaston has the characteristics of a vampire. Also I'm glad I'm not the only person that compared vampires to a fairy tale.
I like your analysis of Beauty and the Beast. I believe that Gaston could be a vampire. However, he would be a failed one, due to the fact that he does not fully take the innocence of Belle.
The essentials of a vampire story is described in the book as selfishness, exploitation to women, and a refusal to respect person space of other people. In other terms, an older male that is attractive by his sexiness and once he gets a women, he starts becoming younger and alive while the victim being infected suffers. Afterwards his victims start becoming like him by hunting their own victims thus starting a chain affect. In bad there has to be a group of good people and these people are the vampires nemesis and do whatever they can to stop the vampires while protecting women. This necessarily does not have to refer to a vampire movie but a piece of literacy with some of these aspects is The Help.
The Help written by Kathryn Stockett tells the story about African American maids being exploited in the 1960's in white households. In this case it wasn't the males being attractive to women but instead the house wives using the services of the maids which allowed the housewives to stay young and attractive while the maids raised their children. There is a part in the book where a maid that was unfairly fired came back to her previous job to deliver a cake made with her own feces, as revenge for the mistreatment she endured during her working years. The controversy behind The Help is when all the maids began to speak about the abuse and mistreatment to one of the household daughters that was raised by one of the maids, she was the nemesis in this story.
I agree with you about what the essentials of a vampire story and how The Help fits into the essentials. I like how you use a non vampire book for the topic.
Posted by: Caleb Costenr The essentials of a Vampire story is to have someone who's needs are more important than anyone else in the book or film. The 'Vampire' also has to be a person who 'feeds' off of the innocence of a youth.
When you hear the word 'Vampire' you might automatically think of Count Dracula, or maybe the movie "Twilight", well not every book or film has to have an actual vampire in it to have the idea of vampirism.
In the film "Dark Shadows" a man who's love interest was killed by a witch. The witch put a spell on the man to become a vampire because he did not love her the way he loved the other woman who was killed and she had him chained and put in a coffin. Thousands of years later men were digging and found the coffin, and released the vampire. The new family that has occupied the Estate which the man use to live in, allows the vampire to stay in the Estate. One by one the man drinks the blood of a family member, until they help the vampire find true love.
Vampires in literature do not always include a blood sucking creature, rather the exploitation and demise of one's innocence. The one committing the acts of vampirism is usually an older figure of corrupt morals and values. This character tries to strip away the innocence of youth from a young female. Through this process, the vampire figure continues life with joy as death and destruction is brought upon the female character.
I have observed the act of vampirism through the film Temptation: Confessions of a marriage counselor. The main character is a young woman named Judith. She is a loving and caring wife to her highschool lover, Brice. However, their marriage starts to go stale.
As Judith is working in a matchmaking firm, she meets a client, Harley. He is very alluring, handsome, and is older than Judith. He sees Judith's relationship going stale and plans on taking Judith away from her husband. After spending time with Harley, Judith starts to sneak away from her husband and acts unfaithfully. She stops caring about her husband and family, only wishing to spend time with Harley.
Harley strips away her innocence and corrupts her morals. He brings destruction to Judith’s character and ruins the marriage between Judith and her husband. Harley is truly acting as a vampire as he brings destruction to Judith for his own enjoyment.
Posted By: Adison Costner The essentials of the vampire story is that not all vampires are showed as a vampire. In the story he said that there was some killed that were described as a normal killer was was really a vampire. This is meaning that not all vampire have a thirst for blood but they do have a thirst for young, virginal women.
I have noticed this in many tv shows and movies. One particular tv show is “Criminal Minds”. In one episode I seen there was this crazed killer on the loose and his targets was young women except the women he targeted was young mothers. He would rape them and then kill them when he was done with them. Therefore you could categorize the killer as a vampire because of this thirst for young mothers.
Reading yours I didn't think of using "Criminal Minds" for this post. I really like the show, and reading this is helped me to see what you were talking about!! ~ Caleb C.
Post By: Karmen Scruggs The essentials of a vampire novel is mostly about one person using others to the first advantage. Sometimes, it is required and it is needed for the takers life. Other times, it is simply because one person wants something out of others. Typically, the storyline has to do with temptation, seduction, and overall just sex; however, I feel that the main idea to making a vampire novel accurate all you need is someone to take advantage of someone else.
A movie that fits within the essentials for a vampire story is one by Marvel called X-Men: The Last Stand. This movie follows quite a few characters as the X-Men movies usually do. In this particular movie, the mutants (supernatural humans) have truly broken apart and are in two different groups and are fighting against each other. The vampires in this story would be Magneto and his followers because they are using humans for their own personal advantage while Xavier and his students are the heroes that try to protect the world.
I love X-Men! And I agree with Hannah. Your description of the scene was amazing and if I had never seen it before, you would have made me want to watch it.
I haven't seen X-Men in a long time, but I've been wondering if the two sides are still the same people. For example, a few people on Xavier's side I know of is Wolverine, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and so on; are they still on the same sides? Has anyone ever switched to Magneto's side or just left in general?
Posted By: Anna K-S The essentials of the Vampire story are not fangs and a cape but and older dishonest person preferably a man, the male also continues to live for a very long time, outworn values, a young female preferably a virgin, and the taking away of the females youth leading to her death or destruction.
“The Vampire Diaries” literally has vampires but this series does contain all the essentials for a vampire story. Damon is a vampire but he is also the older dishonest man and since Damon is a vampire he has lived for a long time and continues to live for a long time. The female is Elena Gilbert. Stefan, Damons brother finds Elena and begins to get to know her when Damon comes to town and wants to get to know Elena as well, Stefan and Damon begin to fight over Elena, after many fights and breakups bad boy Damon gets the girl (Elena) eventually ending in her death due to Damon's mother wanting to hurt Damon, but before Elena dies she is stripped of her humanity or youth in result of becoming a vampire and losing everyone she loves. There are outworn values such as the need to invite a vampire in before the vampire can enter a home.
When one thinks of a vampire story they typically think of a person without a heartbeat, pale skin, fangs, and the thirst for blood. On the contrary, not all “vampires” have to look this way; they can just be an allusion for that type of person. They’re typically an attractive person that causes everybody else to become lustful and uses others for their benefit.
In “The Vampire Diaries” there is a character named Katherine Pierce, who fits this archetype perfectly. She is one of the older vampires in the show who uses anyone necessary to get what she wants. At one point she gets both Damon Salvatore and Stefan Salvatore to fall in love with her not knowing that their brother is also seeing her. When she gets backed into a corner she gives away Damon and Stefan, leaving them for dead while she gets away. Years later she comes back and starts more drama and uses even more men. Her thing is that she doesn’t need anyone and doesn’t trust anyone either. She’s able to do so because she’s beautiful and mysterious. -Piper Colangelo
Posted by Maria McDonald: When someone hears the word vampire, they typically think of a fanged, bloodthirsty creature draped in a black cape but in reality there are other aspects of vampirism such as selfishness and exploitation. The essentials for a story to have a "vampire" are an older man with corrupt values, a young virgin female, and the death or destruction of the female in any sense of the word. There are many stories with your normal fanged vampire such as Dracula and Twilight but Forrest Gump also has an example of a vampire. A friend of Forrest's named Jenny is taken advantage of sexually as a little girl by her father. He stripped of her of her innocence and it lead to her growing up to being a sex addict. Because of this, she ended up getting aids and at the end of the film she dies from it. Jenny's father in the film was the vampire because he was an older man who exploited a young female which essentially lead to the young girl's destruction.
I liked the connection you made with Forrest Gump. I love the movie and I now see the connection. Before this post I would have never have made this connection.
I've only seen Forrest Gump once, but I had no idea that Jenny was taken advantage of by her father. I should probably see it again; it was a great movie.
Posted By: Aleigha Letterman The essentials of a vampire story are someone (usually a male) taking advantage of another (usually a female, who is a virgin) in various ways. The vampire, doesn't always have to be a literal vampire, the vampire is just a person who takes advantage of someone and deprives them of their youth and virtue. The vampire is dishonest, attractive, mysterious, and is tempting. The victim is a person who is typically a virgin and is innocent in other ways as well.
In season four of Arrow there is a man named Damion Dark, who has special abilities. He is defiantly a vampire in a non-literal sense. Damion is the leader of an organization called HIVE, who have caused many issues for the vigilantes of Starling City. Damion lures young, fit men and women to join his army. It doesn't seem that "vampirey" until we find out that Damion gives mind controlling to his "ghosts", which is what he calls his army members. The name is fitting because they are not in control of their actions, Damion is. Damion Dark fits the essentials of a vampire, he is older, dishonest, and although his is not sexy, he tempts others with deals that they cannot resist. Damion also smart, fast, and he holds control over his victims. Damion is a vampire because he is depriving his "ghosts" of their control, he doesn't tell them that they aren't going to be in control of their minds, and if he doesn't get his way with his hive he kills them.
The ghosts are the victims because they are deprived of their mind. They are completely controlled by Damion. They come willingly, but are lied to about all of the terms. The ghosts are not told that they are going to be drugged, nor are they told about their life contract. When the ghosts join Damion they have cyanide capsules put in their back teeth, so if they are captured they are hardwired to kill themselves by biting down hard on the capsule of cyanide.
I liked that you did not use a vampire story but a story that had the characteristics of a vampire story since not every vampire story has to involve vampires.
I believe the essentials of the vampire story are taking away pureness or wholesomeness to make the antagonist more powerful and youthful. The vampire is almost always older, but appears more young by taking advantage ofyouthful, and usually innocent females. I see this to be true in the popular television show, The Vampire Diaries. One of the lead characters, Damon is always taking advantage of young women by his supernatural power of persuasion, after he has stolen their innocence he drinks their blood and the two combined makes him stronger and more attractive. When he does not do this his skin gets super pale and he gets wrinkly, older, and weak. Like the book suggests Damon has no remorse or grief for doing this. However, I am intrigued that Damon's brother, Stefan contradicts that. Stefan tries to resist killing humans or even drinking human blood without killing them. Stefan is remorseful when he accidently slips of the wagon. Stefan could not control himself after having tasted human blood for the first time in hundreds of ears and goes on a rampage. He is so ashamed of himself that when his girlfriend and Damon lock him in a basement until he can control himself, he refuses to even eat animal blood, something he has to have to survive. Instead, Stefan declares he is going to let himself die, however (spoiler) he does not. But, as I reminisce this I realize Stefan still has all of the same qualities the book suggest of vampires, he just tries to find alternative ways to survive as a vampire, unlike Damon or Dracula.
Have you decided to watch the rest of the series Jessica? I love it, and I definitely agree with you. Damon is attractive, and has all the essentials of a vampire, but he does have a soft spot for Elena.
No, I will not watch the rest of the series. I never finished the first season, it just was not for me, however, I found it to be a great example for the blog so I'm glad I watched some! Isn't Elena with Stefan though, Aliegha?
As stated in the book (page 16) the essentials of vampirism are selfishness, exploitation, and the refusal to respect other people. One work that I can compare this to is an anime called “Vampire Knight” (terrible, don’t watch it) where there is a school that lets vampires and humans learn on the same campus, which was previously unheard of. Through the anime the vampires and want to be vampires show countless acts of vampirism from sucking blood from a poor unsuspecting human (exploitation) all the way to cruel murders (no respect and selfishness).
The essentials of the vampire story is about someone taking advantage of an another person in an act of selfishness and using them to do their things. An example of this would be the movie Hercules. The character Hades, the villain, takes advantage of Meg after an accident happen and after Hercules meet Meg and he falls in love with her, Hades used her to help get rid of Hercules.
Vampire stories have been widely interpreted in recent years. There are many essentials that make a good vampire story including things such as the classic vampire which tends to be older taking advantage of younger people, which are typically females. The first story of a vampire was Dracula written in 1897 Bram Stoker. Dracula is a classic book that tells the vivid story of Jonathan Harker's fiancee, Mina. Throughout the story she falls ill and they attempt to revive her. They eventually determine that she's a vampire in the only way to kill her if she drive a wooden stake through her heart. They determine the Dracula, a friend of Johnathan's, was behind her illness and they hunt him down. There's been many different vampire stories and this is just one of the thousands today.
The essentials of a vampire story are, an older man that has corrupt values tries to strip away a young women's youth, energy, and virtue to try and continue his life by destroying the women. Vampires tend to be selfish, exploit people, and refuse to respect anatomy of others. In Vladimir Nobokov's, Lolita, Humbert Humbert is a 37 year old literature professor who is obsessed with the 12 year old, Dolores Haze (He later nicknames her Lolita) He becomes her stepfather and soon get sexually involved with Lolita. Humbert Humbert obviously has corrupt due to him being attracted to a 12 year old. He physically took lolita's innocence away in having sexual intercourse with her. He stripped her of her youth, virtue, and energy. She wasn't the same soon after they met. He didn't feel whole when she was away from him. He is selfish for taking her life away by taking her to different states just so he can continue being involved with her without people questioning. She wasn't able to do anything kid like and he would take away her things if she didn't do something sexual to him or with him.
In the story an elderly man full of hatred and greed is depicted, he's shown to be heartless and to be feared of. He is the “top dog” forsay and like most he is also selfish and enjoys taking advantage of others. Most of the essentials found in vampire movies or books are always people usually male and he is usually projected as mean and cold blooded the man is always selfish and rude has no room for love and is trapped by past events that have traumatized him to be the way he is. In the movie Hotel Transylvania 2 an old greedy cold blooded vampire is shown who hates human but an the end he falls in love with his grandson and learns to accept everybody no matter if their human or not.
Whenever I think of a vampire story, I think about innocent people being harmed by blood-thirsty vampires then a huge plot twist which ends up ending the afterlife of the vampire. For example, in the film “Innocent Blood” the blood thirsty vampire (otherwise known as Marie) enjoys attacking and sucking the innocent life out of younger males. However, Marie bit (literally and figuratively) off more than she can chew. By doing this, she ended up turning one of her victims into a vampire who later ends up forming a mob of vampires to end Marie’s existence.
I really like your comparison and to me it seems kind of ironic because what she started ended up being the thing that destroyed her. I guess you could say it came back to bite her. (Haha get it?)
A vampire is usually an individual who takes advantage of the innocent and corrupts them. Although it is not one person in particular, a newer example of this is from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In this movie the First Order resembles a vampire. Unlike the old Empire, the First Order kidnaps children from their families and trains them to become stormtroopers, some of the most powerful warriors in the Galaxy. Stormtroopers are trained to have no remorse and are stripped of their innocence, as shown in the beginning of the movie, murdering a whole village of helpless people because of an order from Kylo Ren.
I agree that The First Order is similar to a vampire. They start taking kids so they will become stormtroopers. By doing this they not only rid them of their innocence, but of their whole childhood and lives.
By: Kalynne Helms When people visualize monsters or ghost they always come up with the creepiest or scariest things but what if they aren't really that creepy or scary? Like Dracula, he was a not so bad looking guy preying on young, beautiful women. He was being selfish. When I think of Vampires and being selfish, I think of one of my favorite tv shows, The Vampire Diaries. There are many villains or bad guys in the show but one that is really known is, Damon Salvatore. He is the brother of the good/hero vampire, Steffin Salvatore. Damon in the beginning of the show, always had his teeth in some girl. He was always killing people and he only cared about himself. He was very, very, very selfish.
A typical vampire story is one about seduction. The vampire tries to take advantage of an unsuspecting individual and tries to take their blood. An example of vampirism I can think of is in the movie Star wars: revenge of the Sith. In the movie Anakin can not deal with loss so when his mom and wife pass away he turns to the dark side of the force even though he knows it's wrong. His transformation was completed when the evil emperor told him that the dark side would be a cure from pain and loss. He was even more tempted by his hate of his mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Vampire stories need to have a element acting against another one, exploiting it and using it for its own gain. The element “feeding” off the other to please its own sick desires. A very gothic almost-vampiric movie called Crimson Peak, it is about a brother and a sister in a incestous relationship marrying off the brother to young maidens and then slowly killing them with poison to inherit their wealth. The brother and sister, Thomas and Lucille Sharpe, use their sharp and darkly attractive features to lure girls to marry Edward, much like a vampire could. There is a scene where the siblings and the protagonist, Edith, are at a park and the duo are dressed head-to-toe in black with sunglasses and even a shot of dying butterflies; how haunting is that. They are the beautiful, cynical, and vampiric antagonists behind Alderdale Hall.
- Olyvia Knight ( I definitely recommend watching this movie, all the actors are great together and it has the great Guillermo del Toros monsters. It is a must-see. I hope I didn't spoil it too much.)
The first essential of a vampire story is a vampire or someone suspected of being a vampire, like Carmilla in the short story by the same name. There is also a creepy castle or town where the story takes place, such as the castle which the protagonist Laura lives. There is usually some sort of lust between the vampire and the main female, which is featured between the lustful, but also friendly, relationship between Carmilla and Laura. The vampire is usually vanquished by people who they have wronged, such is the fate of Carmilla who is staked through the heart by the Imperial Commission that had set out to destroy Carmilla.
The essentials of the vampire story is a corrupt older figure that strips the youth or virtue from a young woman. The vampire feeds on the innocence of another figure and will attempt to take advantage of them. A great example of vampirism is in the movie, Coraline. In this movie Coraline discovers a whole different world inside the walls of her new home. Her “other mother” lures her into this world in hopes to steal her youth and vitality. She wanted to drain the life out of Coraline and keep her in the alternate world forever. Although the “vampire” isn’t male, I still think she fits the description quite well.
The essentials of a vampire story isn't necessarily a vampire at all. It is the traits that a vampire possesses. Some of those traits are hatred, greed/selfishness, and issues and subjects claimed to be "taboo." I was stumped when it came to thinking of this, but I feel like "Tuck Everlasting" could be a good example.
The main character, Winnie Foster, finds out about a family who drinks from this spring in the woods and it allows then to stay young forever. Throughout the book, The man in the yellow suit finds out about the spring and he wants to sell the water from it for profit. This shows the greed and selfishness trait that vampire stories have within it. The man is actually a good example of a vampire who isn't really a vampire at all.
There are many different essentials for a vampire story, some include seduction, hatred, and selfishness. When I think of vampires I always think of the Twilight series. In this series there are 2 different types of vampires those that like human blood( the bad guys) an those that like animal blood(typically good guys). You can tell the difference between the two by their eyes. They both have different colored eyes. The vampires that like human blood don't get along with the ones that like animal blood. They chase after humans including Bella and Edward and his family must keep her safe. Although later in the series Bella becomes a vampire herself.
A story does not have to have vampires to be considered a vampire story. How is that possible you may ask? Well, it's not the vampires that make it a vampire story, it's the patterns in literature. The essentials of a vampire story include an older figure that represents corrupt values, a young virginal female, the continuance of the life force of the older figure and the death or destruction of the innocent young women. (Foster, 19)
Forrest Gump is a great example of vampirism. Jenny, Forrest's’ childhood crush was raped at a young age by her drunken father. Jenny’s father, in this case, would be considered the vampire because he stripped her of her innocence with his corrupt values. On the other hand, we see that Jenny’s life starts to deteriorate. Since she doesn’t know how to cope with the pain she begins to use drugs and develops a sex addiction, which leads to her diagnosis of aids that sadly takes her life.
Elizabeth Suarez. The main essentials of a vampire or vampire-like story are: 1. An older type figure with corrupt values. 2. A young female that is a virgin in many cases. 3. The destruction of that female. (youth, energy, etc.)
I will be using the book Control as my example. In this book the main character, Zelia, is going against a group of people with a dark, mysterious leader. This leader is older than everyone in the group and it trying to crush Zelia so she can't rescue her sister.
The essentials of a Vampire story are “an older figure representing corrupt, outworn values; a young” (Foster, pg. 19) female or male. Vampire stories usually contain temptation, lust, and seduction. Many people believe that a Vampire story only occur when vampire are involved in the plot, but truly “normal” human have a Vampire story. An example of a Vampire story is a novel called “Speak” written by Laurie Halse Anderson. In the novel “Speak”, the protagonist is a freshman girl named Melinda Sordino and the antagonist is a senior high school student named Andy Evans. It is Melinda first day of high school and she is very scared that she will not be able to fit in. Andy Evans spots Melinda during lunch with another friend and invites them to a party. Andy had recently talked to Melinda in Art Class, in which they had glance at each other all through class and this is showing temptation, in a way. Melinda and her friend go to the party where Andy takes Melinda out to dance and givings her alcohol to drink. Later, Andy states that the party is boring and take her to his car where he kiss her and raps her. After, it happen Andy leaves Melinda at the parking lot of the part and makes her walk home. Andy has left Melinda to a mindset that she has no values anymore and Andy symbolizes a vampire that has flushed all of Melinda’s blood. Melinda act different really shy, does not speak to anyone, and feels worthless like every values she ever contain has been torn away. Melinda energy to life in no longer with her.
The essentials of a Vampire story are that a figure, the vampire, in some way takes advantage of someone weaker than themselves to leave them a shell of their former selves that will eventually turn into a vampire themselves. In “A Series of Unfortunate Events” a man wishing to steal the money of recently orphaned children, whose parents happened to be rich, tries to get those children in his control so that when they die he will get their money. He is the vampire, an older man who tries to steal from children who have just had to come to grips with the death of their parents. He causes them no small amount of strife, all in pursuit of money. He is turning them into hardened and skeptical people who will never trust anyone again because of what he has done. The man tries to suck them dry and steal their fortune, simultaneously turning them into children who are just as unhappy as he is.

Riley Kiefer In a Vampire Story, there is mainly selfishness, and exploitation, along with the need/want for sex. I am absolutely obsessed with history and I have been watching a documentary series on the Kennedy family. In this series, they did an episode solely on Jackie ( Jackie O) and Jack (JFK). I know that this is history and not really a literary work, but there has been books and movies written about them. According to The Kennedy Files, young Jackie Bouvier was an intelligent woman who was never afraid to put a person in their place kindly and gracefully. When she met Jack (JFK), he was ataken by her. It was very apparent that Jackie would be a great help to the young senator who was on the road to becoming the president. Most people think that they had an amazing love story, which they did in their own way, but most of the time JFK was either working or playing with his mistresses. Jackie knew how to look good and stage things in the right way. She also knew when to or not to be seen. JFK ,his people, his lifestyle and his father pretty much controlled Jackie. They were the people who acted selfish and exploited her. JFK exploited Jackie, slept with other women and acted selfish. Yes, Jackie O and JFK had a great love story… at the end of their marriage, but after JFK was not a Vampire, their love story went into the history books.
Most people feel as if when they read or see something about a vampire, it’s evil, frightening, scary, or gruesome. Most things aren’t like that though. Most of the time, vampires are known to be seductive, mysterious, kind at points, and very attractive! Thing is, that doesn’t stop them from being tempted to drink blood or feed away from other’s innocence. In Frozen, Hans was a very charming prince. He was liked by others and was stunning and even funny. Anna was madly in love with him and they were even going to get married on the first day! He gave off an outrageously good impression. Later on when Anna came back from looking for her sister, she found out that he wasn’t as charming as he appeared. He was planning on letting Anna freeze to death and have her sister killed in order for him to rule the kingdom that use to be of their dead mother and father. He later didn’t achieve that but you must be careful in who you trust.
Morgan Ealey When someone says vampire the first thing that comes to my mind is the movie Twilight. That’s cliché so I will be doing my example on something that is less foreign to me. Again I will use the example of The Little Mermaid. A vampire story usually consists of an older figure representing corrupt, outworn values; a young, preferably virginal female; a stripping away of her youth, energy, virtue; a continuance of life force of the old male; the death or destruction of the young woman. In this situation, Ursula is not a man she is an old woman living in a dark cave with her eels. She takes young mermen and mermaids and turns them into plants if they cannot pay her back whatever she wants. In the movie, she gives Ariel legs but Ariel had to give her voice up. Throughout the movie Ursula sabotages Ariel's chances of Eric falling in love with her. Examples are, tipping the boat over when Eric and Ariel are about to kiss and Ursula putting a spell on Eric so she can marry him.
What are the essentials of the Vampire story? Apply this to a literary work you have read or viewed.
The essentials of a Vampire story is love, evilness, greed, sex, and murder. We've all seen Twilight but one move I've viewed that showed these essential was "Vampire in Brooklyn". The main character is Eddie Murphy and he plays a vampire that has awoken and is looking to find a vampire queen. He is very evil and uses his power to cause problems.
Being a vampire is not what it seems like. It’s a life full of good, and amazing things. We are as human as you are.. It’s not what you are that counts, but how you choose to be.

It's not really the thirst for blood that fuels the vampire, but the innocence and beauty of life.

ReplyDeleteA vampire story is primarily about exploitation or taking advantage of others.
Too much summary. Remember to focus on the purpose/topic.
DeleteThis a pretty interesting spin on the idea. Rather absolute murder of the victim, the vampire further uses the victim after taking their youth.

ReplyDeleteA vampire story is typically about seduction.
Damon is my favorite character on The Vampire Diaries! He is a perfect representation of a vampire and all that the idea embodies.
DeleteI haven't been able to catch up with the series lately but it's one of the best. I agree with how you were able to describe a vampire and the essentials of a vampire story. Damon has that charm and is very attractive, one of my favorites.
DeleteThis is one my favorite shows and I agree that Damon is the perfect example of a vampire with his overall looks and persona.

ReplyDeleteThe essentials of a vampire story as stated by the book are "an old figure representing corrupt, outworn values; a young, preferably virginal female; a stripping away of her youth, energy, virtue; a continuance of the life force of the old male; the death or destruction of the young women." (Foster 19).
DeleteThis is a very cool connection that you made, Hannah. I can definitely see the relation with vampires since the queen stays young even though she is old.
DeleteDisney movies seem to like to use a theme of vampirism in their antagonists.
DeleteI agree that Snow White is a good relation to vampires.
DeleteThis is a very good example that ties in well with chapter 8.

ReplyDeleteWhen the word vampire comes to mind, one visualizes a frightening, disturbing dead man with fangs that lives in deserted homes and frigidly sucks human blood.
ReplyDeleteVampirism is exemplified in The Darkest Minds through interactions of the main character and a corrupted American government.

ReplyDeleteThe idea of vampires is used both literally and figuratively throughout many different literary works. However, not all literary works require a character that runs around town sucking the blood out of each naive girl in their path. Vampires are more than the “undead.”
The essentials of a Vampire story is a character that is deceitful and selfish.
DeleteI love the Vampire Diaries and I totally agree with Damon being selfish and difficult.
Delete-Kalynne H.
I was waiting for Klaus and Caroline to date and was very disappointed when they didn't, but understood because of the personality differences. Klaus was evil and vindictive while Caroline was more pure and sweet.

This is a great representation of a "vampire" and I find it even more amusing because they are both actual vampires.
DeleteI think this represents vampires perfectly. Good job!

DeleteThe essentials of a vampire story include many things.
ReplyDeleteIn Twighlight, yes I know it's silly, but in Twighlight there are several Vampires, but the "vampires" are Victoria and her crew.
Twilight
DeleteI love the Twilight series and Belle, I think, would be considered a victim as well because that is who Victoria is after throughout the movies after they killed her boyfriend.
Delete-Kalynne H.
I think that this is a great representation. Twilight is my favorite series and truthfully, I think that the boy that Victoria seduces is the real reason she is a "vampire." She doesn't love him but pretends that she does to get her way and that seems like a "vampire" to me.
DeleteI also think it is really interesting how vampires are known for sucking the life out of people, but when edward meets bella, bella really starts living.

ReplyDeleteVampires.
Interesting perception of Count Olaf. I never saw him as a character that could represent a vampire, but it makes sense!
DeleteI agree with you, Count Olaf does have vampire characteristics. He was a very evil man who wanted the kids dead and he would do anything to make that happen.
DeleteI agree with your analysis of Count Olaf, I've never seen "A Series of Unfortunate Events" as being a vampire story until now.
DeleteThat was an interesting connection!
DeleteHe wasnt trying to kill them to suck their blood, he was trying to kill them to suck the money out of their bank accounts.
DeleteA good vampire story has many substantial things that can make it stand clear in a hoard of other literature.
ReplyDeleteWhile he may not be a vampire, I think that Gaston from "Beauty and the Beast" could somewhat amplifies some of the vampires traits.I may be crazy, but for starters he is man who seems older than Belle and wishes to marry her.
DeleteI like your analysis of Beauty and the Beast. I believe that Gaston could be a vampire. However, he would be a failed one, due to the fact that he does not fully take the innocence of Belle.
DeleteWow, never thought about that, good job on this.
DeleteThis is an interesting but accurate example of vampirism.
DeleteThe essentials of a vampire story is described in the book as selfishness, exploitation to women, and a refusal to respect person space of other people.
ReplyDeleteThe Help written by Kathryn Stockett tells the story about African American maids being exploited in the 1960's in white households.
DeleteGood example, it wasn't as obvious as others, so it shows you did some thinking!

ReplyDeleteThe essentials of a Vampire story is to have someone who's needs are more important than anyone else in the book or film.
I love that movie and it's a great example of a vampire story. I think the witch could also somewhat classify as a vampire according to the book.
DeleteVampires in literature do not always include a blood sucking creature, rather the exploitation and demise of one's innocence. The one committing the acts of vampirism is usually an older figure of corrupt morals and values. This character tries to strip away the innocence of youth from a young female. Through this process, the vampire figure continues life with joy as death and destruction is brought upon the female character.
ReplyDeleteI have observed the act of vampirism through the film Temptation: Confessions of a marriage counselor.

ReplyDeleteThe essentials of the vampire story is that not all vampires are showed as a vampire.

ReplyDeleteThe essentials of a vampire novel is mostly about one person using others to the first advantage.
I've never watched X-Men but it seems interesting based off your description of the scene!
DeleteI love X-Men! And I agree with Hannah. Your description of the scene was amazing and if I had never seen it before, you would have made me want to watch it.
DeleteI haven't seen X-Men in a long time, but I've been wondering if the two sides are still the same people. For example, a few people on Xavier's side I know of is Wolverine, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and so on; are they still on the same sides? Has anyone ever switched to Magneto's side or just left in general?
DeleteLove X-Men. Magneto is a great example of a vampire, never really though of that.

ReplyDeleteThe essentials of the Vampire story are not fangs and a cape but and older dishonest person preferably a man, the male also continues to live for a very long time, outworn values, a young female preferably a virgin, and the taking away of the females youth leading to her death or destruction.
I never seen the "vampire diaries" but it fit into what the topic is about and it is a great example.
DeleteCool example; this show fits into the catagory of vampires perfectly.
DeleteWhen one thinks of a vampire story they typically think of a person without a heartbeat, pale skin, fangs, and the thirst for blood. On the contrary, not all “vampires” have to look this way; they can just be an allusion for that type of person. They’re typically an attractive person that causes everybody else to become lustful and uses others for their benefit.
ReplyDeleteIn “The Vampire Diaries” there is a character named Katherine Pierce, who fits this archetype perfectly.

ReplyDeleteWhen someone hears the word vampire, they typically think of a fanged, bloodthirsty creature draped in a black cape but in reality there are other aspects of vampirism such as selfishness and exploitation.
I think that this is a really good example of a vampire story. I would have never made that connection like you did.
DeleteI liked the connection you made with Forrest Gump. I love the movie and I now see the connection. Before this post I would have never have made this connection.
DeleteAleigha
I've only seen Forrest Gump once, but I had no idea that Jenny was taken advantage of by her father. I should probably see it again; it was a great movie.

ReplyDeleteThe essentials of a vampire story are someone (usually a male) taking advantage of another (usually a female, who is a virgin) in various ways.
DeleteI love this show so much! I like the connection you made and I think you explained really well how Damion Darhk is the vampire.
DeleteI believe the essentials of the vampire story are taking away pureness or wholesomeness to make the antagonist more powerful and youthful.
ReplyDeleteI have only seen the first 2 seasons of the show, and I never thought about how Damon does that.
DeleteHave you decided to watch the rest of the series Jessica? I love it, and I definitely agree with you. Damon is attractive, and has all the essentials of a vampire, but he does have a soft spot for Elena.
DeleteAleigha
No, I will not watch the rest of the series. I never finished the first season, it just was not for me, however, I found it to be a great example for the blog so I'm glad I watched some! Isn't Elena with Stefan though, Aliegha?
DeleteAs stated in the book (page 16) the essentials of vampirism are selfishness, exploitation, and the refusal to respect other people.
ReplyDeleteChristopher Johnson
DeleteI have seen some of Vampire Knight and I agree that it wasn't good. But I think that you have a good example.
DeleteWhile I have not seen this anime through what you have wrote it seems as if you have a good example.
DeleteGrace, it was painful to get through the whole thing, glad someone gets the post.
DeleteThe essentials of the vampire story is about someone taking advantage of an another person in an act of selfishness and using them to do their things. An example of this would be the movie Hercules. The character Hades, the villain, takes advantage of Meg after an accident happen and after Hercules meet Meg and he falls in love with her, Hades used her to help get rid of Hercules.

ReplyDeleteVampire stories have been widely interpreted in recent years.
ReplyDeleteIn Vladimir Nobokov's, Lolita, Humbert Humbert is a 37 year old literature professor who is obsessed with the 12 year old, Dolores Haze (He later nicknames her Lolita) He becomes her stepfather and soon get sexually involved with Lolita.
Although Humbert Humbert is not a vampire, and this is not a vampire story, he did have the characteristics of one.(I pressed send to early)
DeleteI liked your connection to the story and the characteristics of a vampire.

DeleteIn the story an elderly man full of hatred and greed is depicted, he's shown to be heartless and to be feared of.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I think of a vampire story, I think about innocent people being harmed by blood-thirsty vampires then a huge plot twist which ends up ending the afterlife of the vampire.

ReplyDeleteA vampire is usually an individual who takes advantage of the innocent and corrupts them.

ReplyDeleteWhen people visualize monsters or ghost they always come up with the creepiest or scariest things but what if they aren't really that creepy or scary? Like Dracula, he was a not so bad looking guy preying on young, beautiful women. He was being selfish.
When I think of Vampires and being selfish, I think of one of my favorite tv shows, The Vampire Diaries. There are many villains or bad guys in the show but one that is really known is, Damon Salvatore. He is the brother of the good/hero vampire, Steffin Salvatore. Damon in the beginning of the show, always had his teeth in some girl. He was always killing people and he only cared about himself. He was very, very, very selfish.
All though I have not seen this show, I still know a little about the show, (Thanks to you), and I totally agree with you here!! ~ Caleb C.

ReplyDeleteA typical vampire story is one about seduction.

DeleteVampire stories need to have a element acting against another one, exploiting it and using it for its own gain.

( I definitely recommend watching this movie, all the actors are great together and it has the great Guillermo del Toros monsters. It is a must-see. I hope I didn't spoil it too much.)
I agree that this movie was really good! Great connections!
DeleteThe first essential of a vampire story is a vampire or someone suspected of being a vampire, like Carmilla in the short story by the same name.

ReplyDeleteThe essentials of the vampire story is a corrupt older figure that strips the youth or virtue from a young woman.
Coraline was such a good movie. That's a really good example, the Other Mother does seem a lot like a vampire.
DeleteI have never seen these movies. I like the points you made, it makes me want to see them now.
DeleteThe essentials of a vampire story isn't necessarily a vampire at all. It is the traits that a vampire possesses. Some of those traits are hatred, greed/selfishness, and issues and subjects claimed to be "taboo." I was stumped when it came to thinking of this, but I feel like "Tuck Everlasting" could be a good example.
ReplyDeleteThe main character, Winnie Foster, finds out about a family who drinks from this spring in the woods and it allows then to stay young forever. Throughout the book, The man in the yellow suit finds out about the spring and he wants to sell the water from it for profit. This shows the greed and selfishness trait that vampire stories have within it. The man is actually a good example of a vampire who isn't really a vampire at all.
-Laurie Ricardo
There are many different essentials for a vampire story, some include seduction, hatred, and selfishness. When I think of vampires I always think of the Twilight series. In this series there are 2 different types of vampires those that like human blood( the bad guys) an those that like animal blood(typically good guys). You can tell the difference between the two by their eyes. They both have different colored eyes. The vampires that like human blood don't get along with the ones that like animal blood. They chase after humans including Bella and Edward and his family must keep her safe. Although later in the series Bella becomes a vampire herself.
ReplyDeleteNice example, Love the movie!

DeleteA story does not have to have vampires to be considered a vampire story.
ReplyDeleteForrest Gump is a great example of vampirism.

ReplyDeleteThe main essentials of a vampire or vampire-like story are:

ReplyDeleteThe essentials of a Vampire story are “an older figure representing corrupt, outworn values; a young” (Foster, pg.
ReplyDeleteIn “A Series of Unfortunate Events” a man wishing to steal the money of recently orphaned children, whose parents happened to be rich, tries to get those children in his control so that when they die he will get their money.

ReplyDeleteIn a Vampire Story, there is mainly selfishness, and exploitation, along with the need/want for sex.

ReplyDeleteMost people feel as if when they read or see something about a vampire, it’s evil, frightening, scary, or gruesome.

ReplyDeleteWhen someone says vampire the first thing that comes to my mind is the movie Twilight.
I like how you used the Little Mermaid, I would have never thought of it.
